Depends on which shoeboxes you get. You can stack all of them while the lids are on normally but Once you flip the lids not so much. The purple handled shoeboxes can be stacked with lids flipped a little better but still shaky.

Good to hear! Assuming we still latch the lids when stacked? Purple handle gang over here. Sometimes when stacking other tubs it seems to choke things off a touch too much. Just double checking…

I wouldn't stack them too high as the bottom ones may get choked off. I stacked mine 3 high and I rotated them daily by moving the bottom one to the top to be safe.

I am trying your SSF SB, I have three of them running and one is starting to pin. I really like this tek. Thank you

I’m looking at shoebox teks for my next standard cube grow because as a noob I have yet to get a tub grow right, except for natals, which I was misting constantly and changing up FAE every few days because I am just working to get a feel of what good growing conditions look like. And they were bullet proof anyway. Having a tek that I can learn from by more or less leaving it alone and trusting that it works right would be a great learning experience. So going to give this tek a shot with a standard cube I haven’t decided on yet while my Lucid Gate tries to survive my “parenting” in a traditional mono. Thanks!

If you have yet to get tub grow right, Shoeboxes will help, but IMO I would first look a little closer at your agar and grain techniques.

I personally love ShoeBoxes and is all I use. When I first started I was planning on doing regular Monotubs. However, my first set of jars were pretty nasty as like a lot of noobs I started with spores directly to grain. It was suggested I try shoeboxes at a 1:2 ratio and it not only worked but I got a pretty descent harvest out of pretty shitty spawn. (see pic of my first jars)

After that first grow I learned agar and learned to get CLEAN SPAWN. I kept doing Shoeboxes though because with Monotubs I had to make sure I had 4 qts of clean spawn. 3 clean jars and 1 questionable jar spawned together ruins the whole tub and I didn't like those odds, Especially when I was pulling over an oz dry per flush from a qt in shoeboxes. In 3 months I was sitting on 2lb of dry mush just in Shoeboxes. So The tubs I bought for Monotubs are now being used for storage.

With Clean Spawn I do 1:3 ratio and the mush love it.

Any luck with the shoeboxes without running a casing or pseudo casing or is it a must to maintain proper conditions?

Casing would depend on species. Pans and Semps get a Peat/verm/lime casing. But they also finish in a Tent(or other type fruiting chamber) once they pin and don't grow in JUST the Shoebox, like cubes or nats would.

I pseudo case everything at spawn just to cover exposed grains. Pseudo casing, unlike a true casing layer, has nothing to do with surface conditions, it's just done to cover exposed grains to help against contam. IMO Pseudo Casing should be always be done.

THis is amazing. I am currently running 7 new boxes now, started at various times.

My only question is about airflow. There doesn't need to be anything done to increase airflow until the lid is cracked right?

From my understanding, the lid is never cracked on these. Just unlatched to allow for a small amount of FAE and dialed in moisture so that the setup requires little, if any, misting. I don’t think this would work well for larger tubs, but I’m willing to see if I can make this work in my dryer than average environment. Got my purple handles, just waiting on 5 quarts of AMVP spawn to grow out.

Hi All,

New user here but I've lurked around and read almost the entire thread looking for answer to my questions but I haven't managed to find much that's similar with my case. See below my details and questions.

1 - I have followed the tek and adjusted quantities to suit how much grain I had available(only one bag of unclebens). I had field capacity as advised and the light is as per the tek too. Also, misted top layer but it was probably not enough water as my mister is one of those fine ones, not a water sprayer per se. Now the questions - see pictures.

2 - Do the lids need to be latched? this is what I've done with mine and I think FAE took a hit.
3 - Temperatures recommended? I used a warm mat that not in direct contact with the box, but the mat's sensor is set on the box and made sure that ambient temperature around the box was 23C(73.4F) - was this too warm?
4 - As per the pictures, the mycelium network has not colonised the entire coco coir substrate, but it "pinned" on the surface. There's no webbing formed on the surface and I haven't seen anything replicating this in any of the 70+ pages in this thread.
5- looks like my mycelium network is developing yellow spots where the colonised grains were - is this normal?

6 - What I've done so far: I unlatched the lid and made sure there is a small gap(2-3mm) for FAE.
7- I also misted until I had small meads of water on the surface and dropped temperature to 20C(68F).

Would appreciate any feedback.

You have a bunch of issues. First lids never get latched in shoeboxes. Secondly from your pics your spawn was very bacterial, way to much metabolites. Third not nearly enough coir. 4th ditch the heating pad. Unless your home is colder than 65f you don't need to do anything.

Stop misting. you won't see beads of water till your sub is more colonized.

Awesome - thanks for your input. I've removed the heat pad and taking in account the advice.

I'm colonising some more bags of unclebens so hopefully in another month or so I'll have some more success fruiting them.

I do have a question about the point made that there's not enough coir - do you mean I should have used a more narrow box so that the thickness(height?) of the substrate is more than what I have here? Mine is 4cm(1.5 inch).

And about the bacterial spawn - once I prepared the coir with boiled water, I realised I can't wait until the morning to prep the shoebox so I covered the pot with foil and put the coir out in the cold to cool down for a few hours so that was stupid of me.
Learning every day and putting it up here so other people don't do what I did. Thanks!

DUDE ditch the uncle bens. UB is garbage for mushrooms. Either learn to do agar and grain or do PF-tek. Keep that UB crap away from shroomery

Move this to the #1 reason you're having problems

You will not be disappointed. UB should be banished from the internet lol. Pftek is very low cost to get the ingredients and wayyyy more reliable. Good luck!

Lighting Not very important for any tek. They just need some light. Even ambient light from a window is plenty for them. I have 1 18W T5 led over each rack.

Thought I'd post here since it's my first non brf grow and of course I feel like I'm running into trouble. Spawned 2 shoeboxes 28 days ago following this tek, still zero pins which is where my concern lies. Had clean agar, clean spawn, posted pics to confirm as well. I followed this tek to a T minus my coir may have been at field capacity or just slightly less, definitely not as dry as the tek(probably my only KNOWN mistake currently). Mixed up 1 myco quart with 1 quart of coir, cased with half a quart for both boxes. On one box I did my best to squeeze most of the water out by hand after noticing I was at field capacity. Noticed it was slightly too wet so I unlatched my lids maybe two weeks or so ago and this is where I stand currently. They get 12 hours of indirect sunlight a day. During the day the temps are between 77-82, at night 70-75. Any help or insight would be appreciated. One part of my gut is telling me I'm being impatient, the other part is telling me that my isolations from agar are non producers.
Edit: As a edit, they're TW's.
