Its been about a month and a half since I started the shoebox so i cant quite recall. I'll watch these 2 new ones and document my finding.

The fruiting @ spawn works best when you keep the surface from getting overgrown. The surface should be just not moist enough for the mycelium to

for myself. How to treat TTBVI to achieve this or if this is even a feasible way to approach them I don't know. Maybe they really do need a
casing.

I have Plenty of Verm on hand so I'll keep this in mind! I'll just have to be a more responsible mushy parent and do what i need to.

"it will stop below or just on the surface and will get ready for the moment when it starts 'raining'" - This is actually a brilliant statement and makes a lot of sense. and now that i'm thinking of it,,,, I think the last shoebox actually stayed TOO moist and thats what caused the excessive overlay. I was scared to let it dry too much but looks like i need to lean into dry more.

What I have found though for my grows is that the substrate is not ready to fruit if there is no signs of knotting. I keep looking for knots on the

A casing is good to have around though cause it just gives you one more option and if you are lazy then use just verm. It's not the best option but
before I chuck out a non fruiting box I'd throw it on to see what happens and maybe get a hint on how to proceed with the next grow.

and what others said is worthwhile trying too. Have you searched the thread for TTBVI grows yet? There is a search box right at the bottom of every
page of the thread in case you have not noticed it yet.

I am actually just now seeing that search bar for the specific thread LMAO thanks for that. I'll definitely be searching specifically for TTBVI.

It is FAST, for example, i spawned to bulk last night at 11pm with about a 1/4 inch pseudo casing and its already beginning to show the first signs of colonization on the surface only 17.5 hours later (4:30pm the next day).

So It almost seems like a race against time with these guys.

I actually did this but it didn't want to grow back over the center, just a few parts along the side. it was easier for me to try to start over than diagnose what was wrong with it. (I've made a dumb amount of LC of all my best plates)

I think it went bacterial over time because it started to smell of slight ammonia a week after i tilled it. Not quite sure what happened. I made a few quart grain run and all the jars looked healthy. I just harvested some cubes from the same grain run. The TTBVI acted much much faster and different than the cubes though. So I'm not sure if it was 1 bad quart out of the 4 I made? All the spawn looked healthy.

I'm still learning though so call it ignorance?

Yeah thats cool, i usually take my contam jars/tubs and put them in the dedicated shroom patch in my outdoor garden and they sometimes pop fruits out

Oh yeah, 1.5 month is way too long to start trying new things.

That is indeed fast. When I wrote the last reply I thought I would try throwing on a second 1/4 or 1/2 inch of dry (maybe dryish) top layer and leave the lid off for as long as it usually take to fully overlay and put the lid back on. Wait another day or two once you see first knots forming on the side of the box and mist heavily.

I hope you are finding some helpful information and getting some better results with your next boxes.

I was thinking the same thing! My only thought would be putting dry coir on top, but i thought you had to pasteurize coir (at least i always do (i pasteurize with oven tek)). or maybe try the verm from the get go.

And so far i'm getting some good information and especially thank you for helping and giving me pointers. You and Beef we're the first influences i had on the forums, so I'm currently talking to the guy that wrote the Tek that helped me yield my first fruits, You! So for that, I thank you again.

Once i get them to fruit I'll do a write up and share it to provide my TTBVI experience.

If you are using just strictly coir for the casing,  there is no need to pasteurize it.

Most people don't even pasteurize the coir for their substrates.  Reason being is that it is basically nutrient free

LMAO well thats really good to know. I've been pasteurizing C.V.G. though I've started leaning towards a 20% Cow poo mix that My cubes really liked.

The dry coir would be the dry layer that Baba gets by just FAE alone. However, whatever the circumstances may be, my shoeboxes dont dry out fast enough/ colonize faster than the shoebox can dry the top layer.

So i wonder if crushing the Coir up and then lightly misting it so its not 100% dry would mimic his results of the dryer top layer. that way the myc can "wait for it to rain"

Cheers bud, I'm always happy trying to help and am even happier when it actually translates into success.

I think I would start verm first since it has a better texture in dry form where as coir is more of a powder, maybe it would be better if it was
hydrates once and then left to dry before applyint, there probably is other stuff out there that could work, will have to dwell on this for a bit.

Other thing that comes to mind is a way lower span ratio to tame it. Someone must have tried this already I guess.

I definitely lowered my spawn ratio this round! I did a 1.5:1 Sub to Spawn last time. This time I did about ~3:1 - 4:1 Sub to Spawn.

I made a bunch of good LC so i can try this as may times as it takes me. I'm determined lol

Before I forget, there is this tek by RoscoeReturns about how to pasteurize small amounts of casing.

Method for pasteurizing small volumes of casing

Just in case you decide to give it a go one day.

Pefect! Ill give this a look when I get home. If I get the overlay and no pins again ill definitely give the casing a try.

Thanks for your help and recomendations Baba!!

@ Baba Yaga

Just for a quick reference on how fast these guys are.

Both spawned on 9/19 using a 20% Cow Poo + C.V.G blend and these pictures are 3 days later 9/22.

0.5qt spawn to 1.5qt sub - 1:3 - 7qt shoebox

1.5qt spawn to ~4.5-5qt sub - ~1:3 - 15qt bigger shoebox

I'm Probably going to do a casing layer if these star to do the same thing as the last because they are looking like they are going to. super fast tomentose growth then it matts/ overlays.

I'll start with you 10:10:0.25 Peat, Verm, Hydrated Lime. I've seen some people talking about hi-yield horticultural hydrated lime. but was wondering if you have a favorite or preference? I have lots of lawn ad garden stores around me so I might be able to find odds and ends.

Any hydrated lime will work.

Since you don't need a lot you could buy a 1lb bag of pickling lime to try it out.

Mix it in with the water and try not to breath it in.
