First Time Mono-Tub Grow............Mono Tub Gods..........Please Help

I have about two grows under my belt with a martha set up.....to me, the martha set up required a great deal set up, maintenance, monitoring, and attention.  I did some research and came to the conclusion that I think the mono-tub is the way I want to go.  Here are my plans and a few questions.....please chime in if I am off track or can answer my question........


I plan on doing BRF cakes and spawning to strait coir.  Would sterilizing the coir ruin it for spawn, or should I pasteurize it.  I feel more comfortable sterilizing.  But if it will ruin the coir, I will pasteurize.

Here is where I get confused.  After I birth my cakes, I mix my crumbled up cakes with the coir and put it in my mono tub.........do I need light at this phase, what about temp.......am I shooting for incubation temp or fruiting temp - or does temp really matter at this stage.  I have read that my holes in my tub should be closed during this phase - is that true?

What would you recommend for a casing......peat/verm?

Here is where I need some tried and tested help - my tub design!  I have four tubs.  I cut a square opening on the lid and glued plexi-glass over the hole for light to enter the tub.  I was going to use ply-fill for my holes.  My tub dimensions are 18L x 13W x 12D - they hold approx 10 gal.  They aren't too big.  I plan on using ~10 1/2 pint jars as my substrate.  I am estimating this would give me about 2" of substrate depth.  I can estimate how far down to put my holes........but how many holes would recommend for a tub this size........what about diameter.

You should look at a few monotub teks. It gives all the details you need,

First off you need to know your substrate depth (including a casing layer if you use one, though coir performs best without a casing layer) so you know where to cut the holes.

Straight coir corks ok on its own, but i suggest supplementing with cofee grounds and gypsym (this will also be in alot of the teks).

You should pasturise your bulk sub asewll as teh casing layer, never sterilise. You have more chance of contamination. You can pasturise by pouring boiling water over your coir in a bucket, then covering the bucket up and leave too cool.

Yes, you need to ensure only gas exchange. You can use polyfill, but pack it tight during colinisaotn, then once you go to fruit, take it out and pack it loose.

75F is fine for colinisation and fruiting

Light wont have any effect untill full colinisation and FAE

You will want atleast 3 inches of substrate depth, below 3 inch mushroom size decreasees. 3" seems to be the sweet spot.

Usuallyt 2 holes on the long side and 1 hole on the short side just above the sub/casing level and also the same at the top.

you need 12-1/2 pint cakes to do a 18 gal. monotub.  so your tub might be to big for this instance.  lookup large_doses tek on pasteurizing coir it has step by step and pics.  Im on my first monotub grow also.  his tek has simplified the whole process for me.  he has tub designs and cake teks and substrate info.  very simple.

How is your grow going..........did you use coir for spawn?

Im still waiting for my BRF cakes to finish colonizing, their about 95-99% done.
so in about a week I'll be spawning to coir/verm/coffee/gypsum. 
just like Large_doses tek.  Im following it exactly.

I use this due to its ease and cleanliness.  Im using it for a while untill I can do it in my sleep. 

then Im changing to hpoo/verm/straw(substrate) and different cakes made w/ground ryeberries/verm/coffee/gypsum.  to see if poo really makes a big differance.

Im a little intimidated by the whole hpoo thing hope I got it down.lol

whichever works better is the tek Im stickin with.

10 cakes would be good for that size for sure.  my tubs are 18gal. and will take a couple days longer to colonize.
