Pasteurizing Coco Coir Using Hydrated Lime * 5

Hello everybody:wave::mushroom2:

Fun fact about me, I've never used boiling water to pastuerize coir, I've always used hydrated lime. Mycelium doesn't mind the ph, though most contamination can't survive at 12.5ph which is what the lime water is.

I know some use cold water anyways. None the less, many want to be sure the coir they are using has been pasteurized to minimize any potential nasties. So I figured, why not post a Tek on how to pastuerize coir with hydrated lime. It's cheap and no boiling is required. Just a little bit of math

Useful conversions/information:

1 gallon = 3785ml

1 quart = 946ml

Water required to hydrate 1g of coir to field capacity = 4.6ml*

Field capacity: when only a drop of water comes from a tightly squeezed handful of coir

Add vermiculite as needed if the batch is over field capacity

6 grams of hydrated lime pastuerizes 1 gallon of water

Using a quart jar is a great way to measure the water required.

Materials needed:

5 gallon bucket
Coco coir
Hi yield brand hydrated lime
Gram scale

Step 1: Weigh the coir



Step 2: Do the math

if the coir is 632g

632ร—4.6= 2907ml

Since 1 gallon is 3685ml we do 2907รท3685=0.788

Since 6 grams of hydrated lime is needed per gallon we do 6-78%= 1.272 then 6-1.272 = 4.728 grams of hydrated lime is needed in 2907ml of water to pastuerize the coir

Step 3: weigh the lime. Try to avoid getting it in your eyes,or breathing it in and wash off skin after handling.



Step 4: measure the water needed, in our case about 2900ml, in one of the quart jars worth of water, add the lime and mix well



Step 5: mix the coir block and water so the lime distributes



Step 6: allow the coir to soak up the lime water over 24 hours. Then shake or stir the bucket to distributed any settled lime.

Enjoy knowing you've not only nuked all the nasties, but any further potential for contaminates to live within the prepped coir have been greatly minimized.

I've always used boiling water with some crushed hand crushed oyster shells and gypsum and well leached coffee grinds and I've never had a problem I literally just did six flushes on a penis in the tub there's more than one way to skin a cat in mycology and I'm sure your method seems to work for you. Awesome

Coir and coir/verm does not need to be pasteurized so this may be unnecessary, but certainly couldn't hurt.

However substrates that need pasteurizing like manure based, straw, sawdust, etc. this could be of great help, especially if one doesn't have the space or equipment to do a proper heat based pasteurization.

From my little experience with cold pasteurizing with hydrated lime it's very easy I'd u follow the recipe and no equipment needed practically ๐Ÿ˜‹

Had great success with straw n I'm glad u posted this as I work with coir sometimes n love to add more to my toolbelt il try it sometime n maby il try it with peat moss n verm also ๐Ÿง๐Ÿ˜œ

Veggie, I did one for straw as well that's in my signature if you are interested.

Agreed, hydrated lime is a great and versatile additive when needing to do away with contamination in more nutritious substrates. May be over kill with coir considering the lack nutrients
