I think you missed my point. These are the policies that Fox news and MAGA are calling Communist.

I didn't know you were making a point.  I wasn't replying to you.  It's not all about you, you narcissistic fuck.

He's doing his CS from home . He has a breathalyzer on his car .
My neighbor was a medic in the army , he served in Afghanistan and works  in a hospital . He should be able to do a half ass job at stocking and bagging . Couldn't you ?
Not everyone who ends in up the justice system is a dangerous person .  He has two little girls and a wife like me . He just made a bad choice golfing with his buddies one day . It could be you , or me , or Bigbadwoof , I'd let you guys  bag my groceries for 10% less , why not .
But if it's full of dangerous nutters  I could just go to Whole Foods and feel like an arrogant prick , I suppose there could be a screening process for our slave labor / community service . It's my only idea .

Philosophically, I believe that paying for the cost of enforcing the laws of the nation is firmly within the acceptable and expected burden that taxpayers should shoulder.  If prosecuting someone costs too much, fines can mitigate that.  Once we get into the business of using incarcerated people to perform tasks that paid employees used to do, we incentivize incarceration.  We already see this happening.  I can't see it as anything but slave labor.

On a more pragmatic note, it is one thing to put people on the side of the freeway cleaning trash.  It's another thing altogether to expect slaves to accurately/adequately stock shelves and clean a grocery store.

And be honest...you're not poor.  If given the choice between buying from a store with well-paid, well-supervised employees at full price or getting a 10% discount at a store staffed by very recently convicted people working for free and supervised by the department of corrections, which would you choose?

All great points.

At first, when he mentioned using community service labor to do the job, I wasn't exactly sure how I felt about it. It sounds like a good idea on the surface, but I have to agree with you, it is not.

On top of all of that, small businesses shouldn't have to compete with a gov't business that uses forced labor, in any context.

What's the prices in the grocery store comrade.

They are supposed to be cheaper than regular grocery stores. I guess we will see.

Since the city owns them they don't have to pay rent.

I saw a breakdown once and it discussed how some grocery stores make 1 or 2% profit, so how can such a grocery store save 30%?

There's a lot of over head costs that wouldn't need to be paid, and that 1 or 2 percent is only pure profit, after accounting for beaurocratic expenditure.

How do you know the city owns the building?  How do you know any given grocery store doesn't? This argument is fully unsupported.

What overhead does a privately owned store pay that a city owned one wouldn't?

The point of a city run grocery store means the city owns it, thus it doesnt have commercial rent or property taxes. And theres also municipal subsidies to consider.

And items can be cheaper if they use the aldi model where theres less diversity but cheaper prices.

Where was released prisoner labour ever mentioned? Or non-living wages?

Keen to see a source for that..

Psilynut brought it up as a silly suggestion for his neighbor doing community service.
Instead of x, suggestion was put him to work in grocery store.

It was more of an idea to offset the cost of operating the store rather than changing my neighbors  situation . He gets commissary  from being in the military, he has a govt run store available to him that sells discounted food . So I don't mind that he has to clean railroad tracks .

The idea makes sense to me. It's not incarceration, it's community service. If you give someone the option to spend six months in jail, or six months at home but they have to stock shelves 20hrs per week or something, what do you think people will choose? These work programs already exist and DSA national has a goal of abolishing prisons. You could pay them fairly, but that would be a real incentive for "incarceration".

How are you going to enforce them to work 20 hours a week without imprisonment.  Where is dsa saying they want to abolish prisons. Nothing would lose elections faster then say that crap out loud.  Easier campaign ads ever.

The system of prisons as for profit should be abolished.

But that doesnt mean prisons should be abolished.

I don't think that's exactly what Enlil meant, I could be wrong tho

I interpreted what Enlil said as meaning incarceration is incentivized because the state benefits by getting free or cheap forced labor

I think you mean conviction would be incentivized? The state is already funded by stolen labor whether someone’s convicted or not.

When you are in a position where the state can tell you that you have to be at location X for a particular timespan or they will drag you to location Y for a longer timespan, that's called incarceration.

They only allow me to give you one thumbs up but I would give ten if possible.

If we want a service, we should pay for it and not privatize it.  On a side note, I was an auto worker.  I remember being pretty mad when the department of revenue was sending me a license renewal with a toyota advertisement because some good public servant thought getting the mail paid for by my competition was a good ideal.  If we want stuff, we should pay for it in my mind.  Stay off the slippery slopes of conflict of interest.

So how does a non-custodial alternative incentivize incarceration? I think it's a bit of a fantasy to suggest police, judges n juries would suddenly go out of their way to enslave people. We have for-profit prisons right now that do incentivize incarceration with bribes. A non-profit state-owned grocery store is not going to have the same goals or abilities to corrupt the judicial system.

Maybe read my post again and try to understand the nuance of multiple different issues?  It's pretty clear you didn't understand what I was saying at all.
