This agar recipe look good?

Is this a good agar recipe?



And are these good ingredients?




And do people just use normal food coloring when they make it different colors?

That is the typical, standard recipe. That is what I use. Good if making 20 plates. Obviously half that for 10 plates.

I don't use food coloring myself, but folks that do I assume use normal food coloring from the market.

Try this

1 cup water..out of the tap
8 grams agar agar
8 grams malt extract
2 tablespoons spoons dehydrated instant potatoes, i just buy plain old ones you would eat
And food coloring to you likening
Food coloring is helpful to see where the myceliumgrows the heaviest. It also lets me know when the plate is fully colonized all the way through not just on top.

Makes 20 plates

If u decide to use food coloring try to make sure it doesn't have antibacterial or antibiotic or antifungal property's (there's some I just don't know which ones)

The dye Red 3 has been reported to be a wee bit antifungal, though the experiments I've see that try to nail it down have been a little hand-wavey.

So maybe avoid Red 3/Erythrosine/E127 on the ingredients list. It's been pulled from a lot of stuff in the US so it's not terribly common either way these days.

It's kind of species dependent, but I would avoid E202 and E211, especially for spores.

I’m curious what the advantage of adding the potatoes is?

I found the difference with the potato flakes is denser mycelium…. if you give the mushrooms as much of a kickoff to start as possible for me, it seems to help the whole process.

I love potato based agar and potato is a classic nute since ages in agar work; normally it's paired with a simple sugar like corn syrup but 99 is doing that with the malt. I haven't mathed it out but I think it's a bit less sugar than a classic PDA which would indeed promote strong growth. Dang next sleeve I'm trying this!

These are both ATL7
Only difference is the one on the left does not have 2 tablespoons of potato flakes in the mixture, one thing you need to throw your agar in the blender because the potato flakes do not like to dissolve as fine as needed
I normally mix everything up and hot water. Let it sit for a couple minutes before I throw it in the blender and then pressure cook it at 45 minutes at 15 psi
