Agar Burning pot
    #29652313 -

When I'm making agar, ive got it all down on how to do it, my first question is is the agar below okay to use? Second question is is there any other way to do it than with a saucepan, i keep caking crap on the bottom of it whenever i use it to boil the agar no matter what i do

Yes, that looks fine. Not all Agar Agar is the same, so if you find your medium is too soft, you might need to add some more the next time, and vice versa.

If you stir well after adding the Agar Agar to the cold water and then bring up the temperature, you shouldn’t have crap caking imo. Just keep stirring enough until it starts boiling and you’re ready.

On the point of it being too soft, the problem with this agar seems to be that when its in the pot, and boiling, it turns into this thick gel, and its impossible to pour i have to spoon it, however when it settles, it always seems to drip slightly if i dont get it to the point where its gel in the pot/microwave, ive bought some telephone just to see if ifs my technique or the agar thats the problem which arrives in a few days, when ive just tested it and put it in a small dish, it does solidify properly, but it doesn't spread out, so just wondering if PC'ing it will do that

either
A) something is horribly amiss with your agar brand
B) you're doing it wrong.
What is your exact method, step by step, exactly?

Ive tried 1%, 2%, 2.5%, and 3% agar powder, anything below 3% is about the consistency of honey days later when cooled, and at 3%, its still slushy in the middle but doesn't move, however when boiling it it turns into a gel that wont move unless i spoon it into a jar and not a liquid, i have tried every recipe i could find on the stove, microwave, PCing it, not PCing it

Edit: also tried premixing the ingredients and going slowly from cold water to hot, which didnt help

Despite being a beginner i wouldnt have thought its my technique as i have tried about 15 times no pour, pour, everything i could find, so i have ordered the telephone brand one anyway to make sure, but just thought id check on here if thats suspicious of the agar

2% for 100.200.250.300.400.500 (2g.4g.5g.6g.8g.10g agar
2.5% for 200,400,500ml (5g.9g.11g agar)
3% for 100 and 200ml (3g.6g agar)
4% for 100 and 200ml (4g.8g agar)

Each in order relating to the quantity of water, all beyond 2.5% were mainly tried in microwave as it became a thick gel which caked to the bottom of the saucepan the instant it got a hint of being warm

Woah there pardner.
First of all, welcome to the shroomery.  Thanks so much for registering an account.

Lets slow down and get you onto a proper agar tek.

Simply do 2% agar and 2% nutrient (light malt extract or comparable) to water.

Soo 1000ml of water should get 20g of each agar powder and light malt extract powder.

In a pot, simmer your ingredients and gently stir until youve got a nice broth.  Dont boil, but do bring to a simmer.

Then. Pour that into your media bottles and pressure cook them at 15psi for 30 minutes.

Vent your pressure cooker for 10 minutes before raising the pressure to 15psi please.

Thats it bud.  While youre waiting, click the link in my signature and read read read.

See folks this is why i teach the tried and true methods.  VARIABLES are what fuck people up and potentially get people hurt! The only thing i use my microwave for is heating up my coffee sometimes

You don't have to do anything except put it and your nutrient in a media bottle and PC for 45m. Crack tbe cap a half turn and foil it tightly; this keeps a sterile barrier once you open the PC and keeps the cap from accidentally closing, which would cause a vacuum in the bottle- hard to open and it will suck in unsterile air.

Check out Stipe's agar writeup, there's a great vid showing how simple it is.

This was something i tried already unfortunately, and it ended as 2 or 3 massive clumps even when mixing with a spoon, only with an aggressive whisk can i get most of the clumps out

I did this and ended up in the same situation with it gelling to the bottom and when cooled having the consistency of honey,

I do it this way:

500ml cold water in small pan on stove top.
Add 6g agar powder, 5g LME powder, stir with fork til dissolved. Add low heat. Stir with fork til boiling begins. Remove heat. Prepour plates.

So only heat it UNTIL it starts to boil? it says wherever else ive looked it needs to boil for minutes for the agar to be activated

It always looks like it will be a boilover mess if it boils too long so I babysit and pull when it starts. I believe the activation temp is below boiling.

that might be where youre going wrong. where is this "wherever else" you've looked? because in this place, we just bring it to simmer and its a done deal.
