Morality of Profiting from Shroomery Knowledge
    #29648938 -

Hi all!

So I have been thinking about all the wealth of information in the shroomery available to everyone for free.

Are there any restrictions on the usage of this knowledge?

Coming from the software world, where profiting from open source software is such a controversial topic makes me wonder.

What do yall thinking about profiting from shroomery knowledge?

For example, what would stop anyone from selling EZ dial monotubs? Should pasty be owed royalties on such invention?

Should knowledge be free, even if it leads unfair compensation?

What do yall think?

EZ dialed monotubs are so easy to make I would assume anyone buying them would have some kind of physical disability, or be extremely impatient/unwilling to follow instructions. And to be fair a lot of people fall into category two.

There are already vendors selling everything related to cultivation. They sell premade monotubs, they sell pre-sterilized grain and pre-pasteurized substrate, they sell a kit that even tells you where to shoot your spores into a bag full of grain and substrate, which has a low success rate. From what people say here a lot of the pre-sterilized stuff is low quality. If you went and sold good quality sterilized grains you'd be providing a service at least.

As for selling monotubs, I cant see people buying it. The instructions are so simple and easy that I couldn't see someone paying more money for it than they can pay for a tote from the big box stores. And anyone who would buy it would fuck up in some other way and write emails and blame you, because they'd only buy it because of their insistence on not following instructions.

Well it is just one example.

Yet, EZ dial monotubs are so easy to make because of all the research and work pasty did, which is exactly my point.

Drilling holes in a box is 1% of the work needed to arrive to the EZ dial monotub, 99% of the rest is research and development.

I guess I shouldnt be so dismissive cause you raise a good point. The people who do research are rarely compensated fully. But in this case they did choose to post it for free.

I think a similar point is raised with legal cannabis. These companies are making a ton of money using genetics from when it was illegal and methods from when it was illegal. They're not compensating those who discovered it all.

Look up what happened to the man who invented TV if you want an example of this...

Your issue would be getting the non-shroomery consumer market to accept Pasty's work. The gen pub is fully onboard with whatever YT is presenting and the vendors there whatever they're selling.

They'd have to do a 180 and admit the massive hole "boomerbins" were shit all along.

And then if folks open their eyes a bit they get tubs at x discount house and make a few holes.

Regarding the rest of the wisdom here, even 50 years later it's not that different than what the Og Ogs wrote.

As far as morality goes, no, I don't think there's a dilemma.

As far as marketability goes, I bet if you know where to advertise you could do well.

I recommend you give it a go and and if it doesn't work, then at least you tried.

Conceptually, named teks are just one persons aggregation and application of of the collective knowledge, sometimes with a little of their own ingenuity sprinkled in. Most teks actually begin with acknowledgements to other people. How do you divvy up the royalties then?

Practically, shipping large items is expensive and there's not a market for someone to make money drilling holes into plastic storage containers.

You're arguing that the legal concept of royalties apply to what is honestly an illegal hobby.  Not really sensible.  I don't think grow bag companies are paying out royalties to the first guy to do a growbag tek.

Growing oyster mushrooms is not illegal. Also, legality varies based on jurisdiction :o

With oysters you can do a lot more even, selling ready to go fruiting blocks they can just cut into and get results. I've seen those at a farmers market.

If he didn't want people to use it, he wouldn't have published it. You can't publish info wide open on the internet with no copyright or anything of the sort and then get mad because someone copied it or profited off of your ideas.

Until someone patents something, it’s all unenforceable and irrelevant from a legal perspective.

Which is the only perspective that matters in the business world.
