I found this pic on the Shroomery Pic Gallery. Of all the terrariums I looked at, this one was different. What is in the middle of the terrarium??

Is it a crumbled cake layed directly on the perlite?

Yah, (case in your terranium), you can if u want; kindof messy. Just do it in plastic (opaque) container. It has to be incubated to allow mycelium to recover from "break up" and allowed to "take over" casing layer. Once that is done then you can "birth" it out of the container directly into the terranium. IMO the whole idea with a casing is to provide more surface area for the mycelial matt to fruit; along with a nutrient rich layer high in moisture. GL.
