Casing Maintenance
    #689450 - 06/20/02 01:54 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

I have ready many casing teks but none of the them explain maintaining it. How often do I water and how? Any special precautions I have to take about humidity? How important of a factor is contam?

Thanks

I didn't even see pin my first casing (10 days in the terrarium), so my advice is to be taken cautiously.

However, I've noticed that spraying towards the casings makes the mycelium diminish and it isn't supposed to happen. My method is to spray upwards or on the lid of my terrarium so that the tiny droplets can fall naturally (vertically and without propulsion) on the casings without hurting the mycelium.

The teks say to water not to let them dry... well, that's difficult, since once they are dry, it's too late and before they are dry, they are still wet... and do not need watering... I have only a few days experience in that field, but I decided to water more "heavily" once a day (following thereby the advice of someone from this forum) and verly lightly the two other times I open my terrarium to "ventilate" it, in order to reestablish the right humidity.

Hope to be of some help,
LilMerlin (who has read the FAQ and thinks it needs improvement for this particular stage of culture.)

P.s. the best means is to fuck up one's casings and try differently next time... I takes time, but it works

hi!
I got some experience with casings:
The only advice I can give you: Do NOT mist your casing, instead make sure that your terrarium humidity is high enough.
Always when I misted my casings, contaminations destroyed my culture.
For additional water supply I use drinking straws and I can only say WOW!
I just started the drinking straw tek and I had a shroom that was 15 cm tall and weighed about 12 grams (wet).

Waldarbeiter, please don't spread misinformation. Don't tell people not to mist their casings. Misting is crucial. There is a right way and a wrong way to do it. Maybe you should take a look at your sterile technique.
