did all my liquid culture die off about a year ago because i neglected to add an air exchange valve on the jar lids? if i add one now, will they revive?

Shake one up and put a bit to agar. I'll bet it revives within a week or two and you can make more. Might work directly on grain too, but you may have to wait longer (and agar is less work in case it actually is dead).

I have never used a gas exchange hole on LC. But I use low nutrient broth - 0.2% - and leave a lot of head space. And I've also stored small amounts of colonized LC in 2ml cryovials with hardly any head space at all, and those have revived for me on agar well after one year.

So my oyster was on for a while, it flattened out. Is it still good to eat, or maybe dry to eat later?

Bottle culture is pretty nice too. Just make the substrate you want, fill quart jars or containers, bore 2-inch holes through the middle, cover with a filtered lid, sterilize, and pour in grain spawn or sawdust spawn after cooling. Takes longer to colonize than bags since you can't fully mix the spawn in. Basically just take the lids off (and keep them humid conditions) to fruit when colonized.

I have only done this with pearl oysters (and not well since I didn't put them in a humidified tent). But with kings, you can put a collar around the top when fruiting to keep the CO2 level higher and encourage fatter stems.

Struggling with turkey tail.  Ive tried twice growing spawn on wheat. Both times it did the same thing: top half colonizes then it stalls out.  I suspect my culture isnt quite clean so i cabined it and tried again and got the same result. 

Any help appreciated.

I have a straw log hanging in my pole barn and when I checked it today I noticed a few fungus gnats hanging out around the drainage holes on the bottom of the bag. Is there a way for me to fight this or am I boned?

Only fruited turkey tail once and this didn't happen, so not sure what's going on. Did it not recover after shaking? I wonder if it's not getting enough GE. Bigger filter hole, or unmodified plastic lid left a bit loose? (The latter is probably how I did mine in the first place.)

Doubt you'll have much luck getting rid of them in a space that's not fairly well sealed from outdoors. (Even inside, it takes weeks...) But they shouldn't hurt the fruits, as long as the substrate is healthy enough that mold spores they happen to carry in can't germinate and spread on it.

Maybe it'd be possible to treat the soak water for future logs with BTS. But since that's live bacteria (harmless to mushroom mycelium), it may not survive heat or lime pasteurization. So you'd have to add it after it's cooled or drained of the alkaline water and let it drain some more. Not sure whether anyone does this with straw.

with as slow as these things are growing, maybe a monotub has too much surface area, increasing likelihood of contamination. Is a big glass or jar perhaps better suited for reishi?
