stupid newbie question: indoor/outdoor?

hi all,
i'm new to this forum, but very very jealous and excited by its contents. that free wedge thread just had me drooling like a pavlov dog - wish i had some edibles on agar to trade. ah well, in time i will.
my q: which common and relatively easy eating species can be grown indoors? i live in London, where the weather is changeable as hell, and only really gets above 70 for a month or two each year. added to this, i only have a roof-terrace thing, and could only grow in big flowerpots on that. no trees or deep well drained earth
anyone got tips for me? here are some that i'm considering: shitake, oysters, reishi, chicken of the woods, king boletus .....
taj very mahal, sk

Oysters are easiest. You could probably make some Grifola frondosa sawdust blocks, let them colonise inside and put them outside in large pots filled with mix to fruit outdoors, but it is a bit late in season to start blocks, me thinks, unless it stays around 50 to 60 (F), during the winter. I am sure others will have good suggestions too.

You could grow many species. Low temperatures are not a problem - most of edibles require low temps, more likely you'll have problems with humididy. Roof-terrace probably dries up quickly, unless my stereotypic picture I have of London as a foggy & humid city holds. I suggest you to start with oysters. They're quick colonizers, grow on wide variety of substrates & there are warm & cold loving species.

Good luck with them :-) and if you need a few oak logs i'll bring some over in exchange for some cactus juice

Yes, the shiitake were cloned from some fresh supermarket shrooms. This will give you a chance to use some of the mycobags you got :-)

Some of the oyster strains will work quite well, and I also recommend shittake. Shiitake are a lot easier to grow than some people assume, assuming you can get your hands on the right substrate.
Mushrooms will actually grow quite well in the UK! Try growing mushrooms where the temperature differently between summer and winter is 60c! ;-)
