Does this need more FAE? Or is that only required once the surface is colonised?

It is a shoebox with a non-gasketed lid, I have just cracked it now though.

For water plates, no then you burned the agar agar is my guess, post a picture.

Ochras in monotube; day 13 after S2B; its time to frutification? They need more fae tan cubes right? Beter open the lid a litle?

Yes more fae than cube. Are you running a fan in growing area? Do you live in dry or humid area? Unmod tub? You should consider these things. I'd say flip lid if air is still in room and you are using unmod tub.

I remember you from the discord. I responded to your question about this tub. It is developing quite some overlay, and although the first pic looks concerning, the tub cross-section (side-view) looks more normal. Can you get a higher quality pic of the substrate from above, with good lighting and high resolution if possible?

this is perfect omg I cant believe i searched posts for like 30min and didnt see this...

And that's your FH setup?
How locally can this be sourced? Just need to know which fan is compatible with which FFU, the rest ill figure out myself, I havent even decided yet what I actually even want, I might go modest I might go beyond modest, Id probably like to start checking out something very similar to what you posted, something thats more wide than tall, preferrably something local or native that doesnt need to be shuffled for days in  and out of terminals/delivery vehicles. :shrug:

The contamination entered when you did your transfers. There's a hole in your sterile technique that allowed the contaminate to enter and proliferate. Just gotta do some narrowing down on the root of the cause. Hang in there friend!:hug::mushroom2: we all go through the ringer in dialing in our technique. The path to clean plates and grows is filled with trial and error :mushroom2:

So I attempted to clone my caerulescens biggest cluster n I know this is hella dirty though same time that fuzzy growth looks identical to what it looked like.

Chances I can clean this up through transferring away?

It never hurts to try. Just take a transfer from the furthest spot away from contamination. If you're looking for a ratio 80:20 good:bad

I've had some bricks of coco coir in my garage for about a year, loosely wrapped in the original plastic packaging. Can I still use it or is it inadvisable?

When flame sterilizing tools for an agar transfer, do I have to wait a bit for it to cool down before using it? Wouldn't using the super-hot tool damage the mycelium somewhat?

I usually cool the loop/scalpel blade in the receiving plate agar before making the transfer.

^^ Yeah. I get some funky growth when I rush using the hot scalpel.

Like he said. Cool it down in a receiving agar or burn a agar plate for the day just to cool down

Had a bit of an odd occurrence this evening. Pasteurized a brick of coir back on Friday using the same method I always have. 1L of water per 200g dry weight, stuff into jars, and immersion cooker'd at 160F for 90 minutes. Nothing fancy. I used most of the batch, but had a bit left over that I just left in its jar at room temp until I had a use for it.

This evening I cracked open the jar and was greeted by a distinct sulfur smell.

None of the other material had that scent, nor do the projects I used it on. There's no visible growth in the material, it's not slimy or sticky, it just smells vaguely of rotten eggs. The lid wasn't bulged, there was no hiss of gas or anything. 

Anyone else ever have an experience like this? I've never left coir sitting around after pasteurizing before so this is a bit new to me all around. I'm currently drying it out in my oven (and boy is THAT making for a... fascinating aroma in my kitchen) just out of curiosity to see how it behaves if rehydrated again.
