It’s time for the 2026 GROWER’S BEST CONTEST, an ongoing event with monthly prizes!

Through our efforts here, many of us make and take beautiful photos of their grows. Let's all have some fun and share our own-best pictures of our mushroom grows. Whether you are an experienced photographer or a complete newcomer to taking pics of mushrooms, we ALL have amazing cameras on our phones & so this is an opportunity to have some fun and maybe learn something. The intention is for this to be a fun and ongoing monthly contest.

The basic idea is that all cultivators may post a pic of their own present or past grows for competition against all others submitted in the same month, with periodic awards & prizes. 

To participate, post ONE picture for competition in the current month. Voting will start on the 25th of the month and will remain open through the last day of the month.

Winners are selected via voting by other participants, and each participant can cast up to 3 votes. The maker of the pic with the most votes wins the FABULOUS PRIZE for that month.

The 2nd message in this thread contains the RULES.

The 3rd message in this thread contains the CATEGORY of competition for the current round, a LIST OF PARTICIPANTS in the current round with links to their photo entries, information on how to VOTE, and info on the current round’s FABULOUS PRIZES.  Only current-round participants may vote.

RULES:
Updated August 27, 2026


- Participants may post ONLY one picture per month.

- To enter a photo into competition, make a post with the pic - that’s it. Entered photos must be from your own grows, current or past.

- Submissions stop at 5pm CST/CDT USA on the 24th day of each month.

- Voting starts at 12:01am CST/CDT USA on the 26th day of each month and continues through 11:59pm CST/CDT USA on the last day of the month.

- Ballots will show all photos in a single post, with a poll-style ballot at the end of the post. Voting is for CURRENT MONTH ENTRANTS only, please. Vote for up to 3 entries.

The category for entries for October 2026 is: “Mutants” (Actives and non-actives are welcome)

VOTING: Voting will be accomplished via a poll-style ballot starting on the 26th day of the month. Voting ends at the end of the month. ONLY participants may vote.

THE FABULOUS PRIZE FOR THE CURRENT PERIOD IS: Downloadable/printable winners certificate (plus some nice spore prints if wanted)

Great idea! Sort of like the pic of the month in the hunting and identification forum. There will be some people that will not want to submit their own pic. Could we nominate other people's pics?

thanks - yeah, I think entrants can all choose our top 3 pics each month and make that work.  ??

I’ve got an idea of how to make the voting and tallying easiy-ish.

i think we gotta kind of figure out the framework of this a bit.  What I have in my mind atm is that anyone can submit what the feel is their best pic (of their own grows) ever, for competition, so wouldn’t have to be current grows.

Might need some categories as well, but would like to keep it simple for a few rounds to get figured out what really works best.

I'm in no matter what, for sure. But rules feels a little unclear rn whether judging is about the quality of the photo, or of the grow it depicts. Would a just okay pic of an insane canopy beat a breathtaking photo of a contam'd fruit?

Could the same photo win more than one month? What about a slightly different photo of the same grow?
 
Kinda like the idea of photo prompt type categories. looking up, gills, moisture, etc. But that kinda requires ongoing grows so idk maybe a different thing.

Very cool idea Bird (or very cool revival of a past idea / thread). As I am probably the worst photographer on site, I don't know if I should / will contribute. And as someone who, on average, does one shoebox of cubes / yr, this month is a pass anyway.

I know some of the more obscure exotics growers have insane levels of skill. Compiling images with perfect lighting, where every pixel is in focus, etc. Really curious what they have to contribute.

@Ras - I’m kinda feeling around right now for what can take root - the “rules” are just my starting point ideas, so wholly changeable.

The judging is kind of “peoples choice” - everyone that enters gets 3 votes per month to make any way they choose. No reason a past winning photo couldn’t be entered, but the participants might stop voting for it, so I’m thinking no rule against that. 

@Churp - could be you have prior grow photos that you want to enter from time to time. Lots of folks have great photos repositories here from past grows.

We may need to do something to let the super-pro photo takes have their own category of competition, or maybe we just let it ride for a couple of rounds and see how it goes?

I dunno - it seemed like a fun thing to maybe try. Hoping it can take root, as it would be a way for folks to have some fun, get some recognition, and show off their grows a bit.

In the 3rd message in this thread, intended to always have the current-period entries and the photo category, I have changed the category from "cubensis" to "any active variety".

Reason for doing that is to keep the door as wide-open as possible as we get started. We need to run a round with anyone willing to kind of figure out our path and process & then hopefully it's off to the races.

@jbgtaa - I realized that, if each participant can only submit one photo per class or subclass of competition, then we could take the easy way and just vote by username.

Agreed on the polling, but it is what it is. I’m gonna see if, on the backside of things, if I can text dump all the votes and auto-tally in a spreadsheet or some such. Will see. Participation is likely to be low enough to not really be a big task, but once this thing gets BIG, like 50 growers every month, then we’ll need a solid process. Bring it!
