TCs: What causes this Pink APE? Examples from 5+ grows * 2
    #29569820 -

TL;DR: Do APEs turn pink as a known thing? Is it for sure contam? Genetic? Environmental? Seems this happens to people.

--

Earlier I posted in pic of the day about these pink insides. When I harvested I didn't really think much of it. My only other albino grow (ever) was a TAT running at the same time (middle pic in sig), so I just chalked it up to "APEs are weird", hit the dehydrator, and moved on. But now I'm second guessing. Been searching for other examples.

Here's DontAskJay about 1.5 years ago in Quick Questions with IMO 100% exactly the same thing. Tree Frog says it might be temps? Their spawn was sus. My grain was definitely perfect, exact same popcorn batch ran literally 40+ other jars with all kinds of shit and zero contam. I had cloned this from an uuuulllltraaaa fucked AIO bag with at least 2 kinds of contam. (more pics in that pic of the day). But the clone samples were from deep inside very thick stipes, good looking tissue, in a flow hood with good technique, induction coil, taken to T5+ with zero sign of anything weird at all. I still have at least 25 plates from various stages in the fridge. Temps were unmanaged so would rise and fall freely between prob high 60s low 70s. Hydration, RH, etc were all normal. Had ochra, tat, and gt on the same grain, CV, and shelves, regular boring grows all around. So if it's weird, it's either on the agar or in this one culture's response to environment.

Quote:
DontAskJay: It could be contamination. Spawn was suspect, but I've taken questionable spawn to bulk and still got a solid flush before.

Reddit's got some instances:
one mentions lions mane and temps again
two mentions it impacted the biggest fruits and turned normal after a night in the fridge?

Possibly BS/unrelated, but just in case...
Somebody sent a.k.a a pic of pink caps and he thinks it's bacterial

Edit: 3 more. Hummingbird on the above:

I would have jumped right on the shower curtain bacteria team if I hadn't seen the light pink in some of the fruits in the one PE culture I grew. It was pretty faint, but was definitely there...not bruise staining on the outside, but some pink in the flesh.

It could have been bacteria or a condition thing, but I don't think it's too crazy to think it could be genetic. I know if that's the case, it's weird that it hasn't been seen more often, but idk...

I picked a fruit today that had a bit of pink coloration at the base. Should I just throw it out, and should I worry about the other fruits? It's reminiscent of the pink mold that's grows in a shower. Out of the 4-5 fruits I picked it was the only one that had it.

kloak says it's fine one post later

I'm gonna keep looking, but I'm real curious about this now.

Anybody know more about this? Does it ever change back? If it really turns back in the fridge, does that rule out contams?

Kinda weird that I've only seen it in not just albinos, but APElikes specifically, when every other cube stipe is just as white. Why them?  Do apes just have some weird recessive stress response where they briefly turn pink lol?

IDK but after all these examples, I am leaning away from contam as an explanation.

Weird shit.

I saw the thread title and was like...hey I've seen that.. and then saw you quoted my post from a few years ago! That culture was a regular PE one, but I've recently seen it again. I'm pretty sure it's my yeti culture doing it, but could also be PE7, I can't remember which. I'll try to get a pic next time I see it to confirm and post it in here.

I ran a lion's mane culture a couple years ago that was really pink when the fruits were young. The other culture I was running at the same time, in the same conditions, didn't ever do that.

I'm still leaning towards genetics, but I'm not sure.

Small world! The only thing better than an eye witness comin' through to corroborate is hearing that it happened again.

:ohyeah:

The biggest mystery for me rn is that I couldn't find more mention of it. I hit that searchbar hard, every single cult post matching
"pink" + [inside, stipe, flesh, tissue, APE]

etc. Maybe I'm just dense. But I kinda expected to see more along the lines of "yea they're known to do that"

Hopefully some TCs come along and shine some light on whether this is expected / uninteresting.

I was thinking about this while going to sleep last night. I thought about how coconut water can sometimes have a similar pink hue, so I looked up why that happens. It's because of polyphenols oxidizing when exposed to light and air. I think it could either be that and/or a small amount of some flavonoid present. Mushrooms produce both of those, and some genetics probably more than others.

It is interesting it's not mentioned more though. I've also seen a slight yellowing reaction in some cubes when cleaning after harvest too, and the above theory could also possibly explain that. Kind of like the blueing reaction, but different chemistry.

Great thread and a curious question, indeed! I feel like I've seen the pink hue before, if not in person then in pics here on the org.

I do not have any input, other than to say you've done some nice detective work and you both have made some great points (and hummingbird would wear the tag far better than I).

I'll be following along

Yeah, I like this a lot rn in terms of possible angles. The chemistry here is way above my pay grade, but I've been digging where I can and oxidation comes up more than most.

Still, I'm trying not to rule anything out this early (...except contams lol).

I talked to a some robots about it and have a tentative suite of experiments to try and shine some light with pedestrian methods. It happens that I have both MIG and oxygen tanks floating around, so I can flood tissue with both and time lapse it in pure vs regular vs no oxygen. Etc. Basic strategy is to try and do a regular grow, get a live sample (all mine's dehydrated), and subject it to enough stuff like citric acid, peroxide, basic categories, that the intersection becomes revealing.

Some other observations I've made (got a big doc on this on my work computer rofl):

Pink always starts center on the vertical axis. Can go wide, but is sometimes a narrow core of 1/3radius or less.

Seems like it can run the full height of the stipe, but tends to be a bit more pronounced towards the base.

Seems to be a crisp-ish boundary between exterior and interior tissue. You can see it in that 2nd reddit pic and some of my dehydrated fruits. Exterior stays white both fresh and dry, about 1-2mm, before the "pink eligible" interior tissue starts.

However, I think I've seen some fruits where the pink does appear on the exterior, but only ever at the base, no more than 20-25% up the stipe.

I've seen a bit of tan in places. It's been outside of the pink core, but not in the exterior, usually on the bottom. Wondering if this is the oxidation/whatever reaction progressing, from pink to tan, etc, whether in response to further exposure, disturbance, etc.

I have a couple pics where there might be some little dabs of pink on the top of the cap, but for now, I'm mostly not thinking abot the caps.

My samples are definitely on the leucistic/hypopigmented end, noticeable difference between cap and stype, gets way more pronounced when dehydrated. Compared to EG the TATs which are ~flawless albinos, white w cap matching stem perfectly, both fresh and dry.

This is more noticeable in some dehydrated fruits, where there's difference in both color (interior darkens to a tan/ochre) and size (interior tissue retracts further in dehydrator, leaving a slight lip).

However, no eye-visible spores even on very mature fruits. Still gotta put the dry ones under 400x. Gill and cap are effectively the same color.

The fact that the interior dehydrates to a single flat color adds to the "pink and tan are the same tissue in different states" idea.

Agreed, that's a very strong contender. Grape Ape will be hard to resist. Blue Meanie has spent too long unchallenged on the throne of the maliciously confusing names.

Incredible. Outstanding. I shall cast my vote to the ether. I found that Bene Gesserit series the other day and felt a genuine type of way that our two ships had crossed in the night. Thanks for the link!

I grow a lot of Lion's Mane and my fruits almost always start out pink/red before fading to white.
