Looks like the same kind used for grain jars, probably functional but short lived. Once it starts soaking up liquid or gets dirty/damaged it will need replacing.

IMPORTANT PRESSURE CANNER NEWS:

Wasn't sure where to put this, but the supreme court just struck down all tariffs today and there is a limited window to get regular priced Presto 23 quart pressure canners again.  I've been tracking their prices for about half a year and when I searched just now I found a bunch that had already dropped back down to under a hundred bucks.

Do not wait, buy now.  Regular priced pressure canners for probably a very limited time!

I typed "23 quart presto pressure canner" into the google search bar.

Amazon is often not the bargain people think it is, it's just convenient.

For anybody using (or considering) autoclavable pp5 plastic 90mm petris, some yogurt quarts are just the right diameter to PC a stack of 8 reused plates. They're a nice complement to a pint jar with 250ml of agar, and not so large that they become awkward in a SAB. This one is store-brand, but The Greek Gods is another brand whose quarts are the same size. I added a 1/4" hole with polyfil to prevent warping, and this one has been through several cycles without any visible wear. These yogurt quarts are significantly cheaper than the metal canisters I've seen people buy for sterilizing plates, and those don't even come with yogurt.

The plates can have some condensation fresh from the PC, but (as with pouring agar) it mostly goes away after a couple days, and won't matter if you're pouring them right away.

(The bottom two are poured and wrapped already, and other brands of pp5 plates are clearer than these ones. I grabbed what was handy to show the stack height.)

As someone that is struggling with glass petri dishes and loves a PP5 - where did you get these?

From Amazon, "Vabiooth" brand. Not wild about ordering from Amazon, but I'm getting a lot of use out of them and haven't seen them elsewhere. Before these I was using pp5 plastic 4 oz twist lid containers or small glass jars. Those are all right, but the petris have MUCH better visibility, and since they have more room to grow out I can either wait longer between transfers or do multiple transfers to the same plate.

I still like the mini-twists for small grain grows to compare cultures and for printing small caps, though. (Those were ochras, grown from literally just a tablespoon of brown rice and a thin layer of coir.)

Nice! All the yogurt containers I have use a different material for their lids (usually LDPE), which can't withstand sterilization temperatures. If you can find one with polypropylene for the lid, too, that's awesome.

If you haven't tried this yet, you can likely get away with pouring the plates and putting the container back on without wrapping them. I do this with smaller (60mm) dishes and wide mouth pint jars, and it saves a lot of time I would have spent wrapping freshly poured plates.

Good call, I forgot to mention needing pp5 lids. You're absolutely right that pp5-bodied containers sometimes still have LPDE lids, particularly clear deli containers.

I feel like with the opaque yogurt container I'd mix up which plates are ready to PC with ones that are poured but not wrapped. I saw somebody suggest wrapping whole stacks with clingfilm or pairs of plates with extra-wide grafting tape though, same general idea.

I just checked and my yogurt containers actually do have PP lids.

Maybe you could mark the ones that are already processed and poured with easily removable labels? Being able to see though the containers definitely helps there.

I've wrapped whole stacks in cling wrap too. Way faster than individually wrapping! I found it more work to get a few out than just keeping them unwrapped in their sterilization containers though.

So I got sore and tired of having to squish myself into the hooded part of my flow hood to backlight plates. I had to look up, squinting through my agar since the light is above the hood. If ya can imagine that.

So I found this gem today at the Lowes nearest me for around $15.

It has adjustable color frequencies from 2700K - 6500K at 150 lumens, which is completely dimmable, and is fully rechargeable and completely wireless.

Been wanting something like this for a minute. Now I don't have to custom build some sort of stand since this seats my condiment cups perfectly on top of the light.

Boing!!

that is not a new tool.  I come here to learn, or share what i've learned.

please contain yourself.

*edit* above user is now banned

here, i made this...

but I think it works poorly. (or i don't know how to use it).  I tried twice to use it to germinate a couple different species, and those two spp. didn't germ.  some species did germ, but literally only one colony per plate (two instances of that).  i'm even afraid I got a monokaryon (is that a stupid fear? the colonies were a perfect circles.)
Can't get it to pick up many spores, even after getting it wet/sticky by putting it into a clean agar dish.

I've gotten by just using a scalpel, and I went back to that method

A tracing pad is also a good option, especially for larger plates

New impulse sealer for my spawn bags. This thing fucks. 7mm seal, adjustable heat, seals unicorn bags like nobodies business, I almost melted the first one. It even came with an extra heating element and fuse in case the original goes out. $90 on amazon, a little pricey but I can tell it's quality.

(Yes, I drink a lot of sake)
