Apollo and Python

A temperature-controlled animal
A python basking in the sun
Pithing to destroy the brain
Inhumane to use a gun

Pithing is a technique
meant for sudden death
destruction of the brain
An expectation and a bet

The goal of pithing
is to render
the cerebral cortex dead
a brain stem nonfunctional
the Invasive species' head

Pithing tool is quite small
And the target it is narrow
Did you get Florida's call?
Pithing's the modern arrow

Apollo's bow retired
for snake hooks and a pyth
And after python's dead
do we dispose it with a knife?

Killing pythons
and chain-sawing trees
A loving guru is a fraudster
Pythons, trees and tigers
Our nature is a monster.

Herculean humans
exterminate the pests
some are small and some are large
hunt them in their nests.

No time to get romantic
and dying passively
the hunting survivalist
surely surpasses me.

Haunted Leather Couch

Where Daphne crouched and kneeled
upon that leather couch
Apollo mounted, still unhealed
Inserted in her south

A dog that shakes it's floppy ears
that rapid-fire slap?
That's the sound the coach it makes
A pounding, slapping, clap

Apollo tries to sleep
But the echo keeps him up
Cupid's arrow lodged too deep
A poison in the cup

A loud, repetitive slapping
Apollo he went hard
Daphne did not moan in pleasure
instead she played a card

"ya gotta go harder than that!"
But that was as hard as he could go
Daphne, Cupid, Zeus and cat
A humiliation do you know?

Daphne felt contempt,
Apollo he felt love
Daphne was impatient
And Cupid wore the glove.

An iron fisted judgement
A calculus and an algebra
A demon laugh was summoned
As Apollo lost his stamina.

Dionysus has his Pamela
Wedded in eternity
But Apollo's damaged anima
A deranged absurdity.

Dimensions

Posit the higher dimension, execute skeptic suspension
The imperative here is to open your mind
Commonly sense your retention, do not slip down a declension
And see what through the science of yoga you find

We have known these realms to exist, so the skeptic mayhap desist
If physics can find them maybe we can keep up
But of course atheism resists, and the science establishment’s pissed
At encountering notions it sees as bleeped up

How very radical indeed, if one can duly plant the seed
Are a slew of hidden, higher frequencies?
What’s the real need, the philosophic greed
For the modern world’s trite delinquencies

Is the cosmos enormous enough, is Nature required to bluff
In suggesting such an interesting truth?
Is consciousness so rough, such narrow-minded stuff
Or are we a society in youth?

Anyway, all we’ve got’s denial, science puffing its chest while
The laughingstocks are oiling their mantra
And who’s winning by a mile? Without a shred of guile?
The furtive practitioners of Tantra

Fallen Cannabis Soldier

Algebra and Calculus
the math for some it stuns
there's chemistry and physics
while some they play with puns.

I once enjoyed a lady
then a second and a third
But ambition made us shady
Was dumped as if a turd.

I'd laugh at reproduction
and focus on just sex
But each lady had escaped me
And desire's become a hex.

I guess that's why there's marriage
to secure the love's supply
A childless man without a wife
I wonder how I make it by.

Fractions and geometry
Hunting, fishing and some farming
Speeding on the highway
Slow and fast are both alarming.

The music speaks so smoothly
while the comedy is rough
the alcohol was rudely
blunting those who bluff.

the ecstasy and bliss
from a simple herb to puff
An eternity to kiss
finitude is not enough.

Animals they shun and flee
the other retreats from other
When Terence speaks of magic elves
is that a yearning for a mother?

Entities that love you back
A bemusement and affection
isn't that what people want
not examination and inspection?

A child he asks, "why are you here?"
It's like he doesn't see the point
my existence is to serve his whims
And it's not to puff the joint.

I'm a soldier that has fallen
into the hands of latest science
I used to puff the magic herb
But anger broke the silence.

Brotherhood of the screaming abyss
Can you hear me shouting back?
The police got me surrounded
I'm now a hostage to a quack.

Time itself became the ransom,
They monetized my life,
Once young, strong and handsome,
I'm ugly, withered, now, in strife.

What would an alien do?
If he was stranded on this globe?
Surely (s)he would go insane
with a pulsing frontal lobe.

Endocrine glands they bind me
I'm limited to this creature
A prisoner to this body
The sex was just a feature.

The term "successful reproduction"
reminds me how I failed
I always used a condom
'guess that's why they call it "nailed."

No Escape

One can’t escape not escaping
Every thought time is taping
What’s not in spacetime does not die
And most are living on the fly

To give some thinking to the goal—
To the bearing of the soul
For atoms no such thing as death
Be calm when you take your last breath

Genes and Memes

It would be rather mean, if we took a gene
And said you cannot go out of your box
But that is what we say
And that is just the way
A gene acts like a super-genius fox

Hold on! I have to say, that’s not really the way
The thing in our reality comes off
They say the genome’s sealed
And what we have to deal
With is something at which Nature has to scoff

Let us take a meme, a bright cultural gleam
And see that it is couched inside a brain
The brain’s an ordered scene
It processes quite clean
And it is not a vacuum if it’s sane

So memes it does seem clear, are obviously here
Because they have a nice place to evolve
There is then goodly reason
Culture’s always in season
And our lovely planet can justly revolve

But genes are not quite so, and some just come to blows!
When they discuss the genome’s operation
Toward the environment
The genome’s diffident
It has a fragmented orientation

If the genome’s disconnected, if Nature’s disaffected
If evolution occurs in the dark
Then why not also memes?
With their orderly themes?
That anything evolves is just a lark

Finally I must suggest, to put the thing to rest
Perhaps genomes also have some spirit hidden
Here’s a meme inside a brain
Here’s a gene part of a chain
Now the problem is in science it’s forbidden!

Raja

The King of all Yoga, put to a tee
The summit of spiritual philosophy
The Bhakta, the Jnana, the Karma yogi
Are not of equivalent excellency

But no need to brag, what gets one so high?
One learns to concentrate well by and by
Deep meditation becomes second nature
Watch maya disperse in a cloudless blue sky

For we must learn to dissolve our delusions
And cease to be troubled by maya’s illusions
Our prana must flow with no stop or stasis
Our chakras propel with profusion

As we ascend, samadhi is the goal
Kundalini that is, the role of the soul
And if we cannot flow from the bottom to top
Our psyches will ground on the shoal

What does one find where Nirvikalpa lies?
A realm of infinity, infinitely wise
The Self and our God exist in purity
And we learn that nobody dies

The slayer and slain, in war, are but one
There is no beginning, nor shall it be done
The summit of all Universal philosophy:
It burns in the heart as a Sun

Consciousness Carries Intention

Consciousness always carries intention
Forming bright spheres of awareness
Circles bore through spatial extension
Permitting light frontiers of fairness

Agency questioned upon the time altar
But being has no constraint
So we see through the future until we falter
With seeing we ourselves acquaint

In the end all Nature keeps on spontaneous
Made up of fluorescent sutures
Nothing here at all extraneous
Trade up to iridescent futures

Altruism

In biology, psychology and anthropology
Altruism is the study
Of why animals (including humans) act altruistically
(Which is to say, selflessly, or with no benefit
To themselves or the preservation or propagation
Of their genes)

This seems counter to evolutionary theory
Wherein, unequivocally, selfishness is the normal mandate

It seems to be admitted by these disciplines
That our understanding of altruistic behavior
Is rather imperfect
But the common rationalization
Is that it has peripheral evolutionary advantages

It is usually reasoned
That in helping another organism
An individual can ensure
That genes in his immediate or extended family
Will be preserved
And that this is a genetic imperative

Frankly, I find all this ad hoc quasi-explanation
To be pretty weak

If the selfish explanation for altruism is correct
If indeed selfishness is preserved, indirectly
And this saves us from inconsistency
It seems to me that no one would be able to save
The life of someone outside his own
Extended family
Or, indeed, give his life for theirs

And yet
This phenomenon occurs all the time
All over the world
In human societies
For example
People continually give their lives
For perfect strangers

How does this have anything—
Anything at all—
To do with propagating one’s genes successfully?

How is such an act selfish?

How do we account for such things
Such acts of altruism
In the light of
The theory of evolution?

It is interesting—and compelling
To note that there are numerous examples
Of inter-species altruism

Many examples of this are known

Whales have saved human lives

Dolphins have saved larger whales’ lives

And on and on

How can our flimsy theory of group selection—
How can the notion of indirect gene preservation
Account for such things?

Saving a member of a different species
Seems, in the indirect selfishness explanation of evolutionary theory
Pretty indirect!

Faith in Logic

Logic

Is no monolith, when it comes to truth

One can construct formal
Logical arguments
But in the end
All that matters is the truth

The actual truth is rarely proven
By some argument

An argument
Is only as valid as its axiomatic premises
And what determines the correctness of those?

And once you have constructed
An argument justifying
Your premises,
What determines the correctness
Of the premises
Of that argument

You see:
It is an infinite regress

So, looking at the provisional
Nature of logical thought
We see that
All we’ve really got
Is our individual consciousness
And common sense
In determining the truth
And that’s it

And the truth, if true, is all that matters
In any formal argument

Indigenous

The workings of the Great Mystery
Endowed a people with spirit
With tribes diverse and disparate
Marking eons of resonant history

Wakan Tanka duly created
Four-leggeds, two-leggeds, all
The green plants, the birds soaring tall
The mountains, the waters, breath bated

The People did not need a priest
Cathedrals, hymn-books or scriptures
To them there weren’t any strictures
For the soul, the spirit, to feast

When placed on reservations
The cultures almost collapsed
The People essentially trapped
The end of the various Nations?

Well, the languages, they almost died
And the old ways were dying out
This was a spiritual rout
And the whites continually lied

All the Indians wanted to do
Was train their medicine men
Schools had no use for them, then
Their own teachings served as a glue

A promising young student of ways
Might go to a place in the hills
And receive a vision that thrills
Perceiving the real ablaze

Shamans, many other ways, too
Objects of sacred veneration
The object was preservation
No one knew what to do

Well, as the decades have passed
Many still denigrated
On reservations segregated
But perhaps the traditions will last

Thanking Great Spirit indeed
That Indigenous are now respected
Traditions no longer rejected
And a People no longer neglected

Lunar Armor

We are gearing up for a return to the Moon
And the emphasis is one of peace
And it sure would be nice if this were primary
And our bellicose nature could cease

But history teaches us grim vigilance
And I’m really just quite forced to reckon
That if some country put a base on the Moon
Toward the militarists it would beckon

Which is to say, if we set up lunar bases
It would all militarize very quickly
Governments, you know, are known for such things
It would all be strategically prickly

Weapons, indeed, would be at issue
Nukes part of the equation
Hard to imagine their not being so
Presidential advisors’ persuasion

A lunar establishment would be indeed
A bonanza for any old nation
A strategic event, planting of a seed
A truly powerful station

So it becomes quite hard to imagine
At least it does to my mind
The whole exploring the Moon business
A peaceful mission for all mankind

The Language User

Look, language I attempt to use
Or is it using me?
I may not sufficiently see
And perhaps I quite abuse
Quite fail when mind-words I peruse
Or lack persistency

But that’s the trick, now isn’t it?
Do thoughts condition word choice?
When I seek poetic voice
Is my consciousness all lit
With a fire while here I sit
And egoically rejoice?

Or is it t’other way around?
Is language using me?
Does it select the words I see?
A brain, not free with choice abound
But I just sit and hear the sound
Of words jerking my knee?

Poetry, indeed, is not a science
It is an art, and all assume
It would not be folly to presume
The words of the poet’s reliance
Are not an act of sheer defiance
As we watch word choice bloom

Do we use language, does it use us?
I like to think words are selected
But I perhaps ought be dejected
When I flex the muscle it’s a plus
And there’s no need for any fuss
But freedom’s rather projected

Digital Coin & the Video Lottery Machine

U-Turns send one backwards
Something was forgotten
To post and share and read
From thinking thoughts begotten

U-turns on a highway,
Lead to jarring, bleak, collisions
A "you" with this and that
It's a need to give derisions

Curiosity 'bout another
A sign of strain and trouble
To ask me my location:
Don't you see the ruin and rubble?

A paranoid privacy setting
Hiding one's location
Yet asking where I'm getting
That's too much information

They mock those who can't read
while saying those who read can't think
There's always higher levels
In every 'you' a poison drink.

Consuming social capital
with quirky-trendy blurts
a habit forming loop
notifying with alerts

One almost won
It's almost funny
The "Near Miss" moment
Allocates one's money

Amplifying the emotions
with a novel digital package
misleading users into
another playful passage

Once we pulled a lever
Nowadays we click
reloading the video screen
with new exciting glowing bits

Click, reload the page
We're excited by the novelty
The repetitions of old age
Youth it is a wannabe

Mocking those online who slur
A religious fundy blunders
GMO's and new vaccines
The social-scape it sunders

It's another golden crack
to keep the tongue in check
to close the mouth,
not chasing clout
An eye defeated by a speck.

Territorial excretions
An animal on fours
The voice I heard in dreams
"At least you know what's yours."

Numb

We have quite detribalized, not yet revitalized
The key item is the individual
We’ve experienced a numbing, also a widespread dumbing
Not a whole lot of the truth residual

There has been diminishment, with no replenishment
Of the ontologically devolving sphere
We are stultified of being, the reasonable fleeing
And a milieu of anxiety and fear

So we come down through the annals, everything is banal
Individuals thought all under the Sun
But we know if we consider, there’s no need to be bitter
The truth here is that everything is One

It is a crucial question, I point out by suggestion
Whether Earth is working with us or against
We see all of these beings, with so few really seeing
And I’m just hoping God is not incensed

Arrogance

All that’s there is flow, naught of it to know
And there isn’t any way to control it
When its face does glow
One may say, “Way to go!”
But the self, one isn’t fit then to extol it

Arrogance, you see, is a mistake to be
Condemned and avoided like a plague
One may say one’s free
With a will that you or me
Might say in practice is a little vague

Because really the thing is, even if you’re a whiz
It’s awfully hard to show that you’re the doer
In fact if Earth’s a quiz
(And perhaps really ‘tis)
Your score would be so poor you’d say, “Just screw ‘er.”

Indeed, you do not do, the things that you see through
You’re not free, and for certain don’t command
Your ego really grew
And you float atop the stew
But, boy, you ain’t that much, please understand
