I appreciate that! For the record these units get delivered with the low setting disabled by default. Apparently the low setting can cause damage when they're run in a series. All I had to do was connect one wire. Easy fix

Sweet! Glad you found the fix.

On the wobble note, my YJINGRUI had a pretty good vibration, too. I added foam feet which helped a little. It was workable for most things, but would cause a stack of glass plates to fall after a couple of minutes every time. No problems with contams, though.

I used some sticky putty and a ceiling fan balance kit to chase out the wobble some. It made it better, but not perfect. With more patience (and scraped knuckles) it might have gotten closer. But I got lucky and found a bargain on a much nicer 2x4 unit locally.

I still have it as a backup. I wanted to give it away, but it costs as much to ship as to get a new one on amazon.

Oh, and side note: those units are famous for missing rivets. I used self tapping sheet metal screws to replace any missing rivets. That may be the source of the rattle that was mentioned in an earlier post.

As the user above me said.

I keep the foam packaging from the FFU delivery because if you put it against the wall or below the filter it can dampen the motion of the fan

Sorry for being too lazy to scroll thro whole thread, but these are close enough parameters for clean work if you play with prefilter + variable speeds?

How loud are these things when on the setting that provides laminar flow?
What setting do you find produces laminar flow (low,medium or high)?

my ffu only shakes above the medium setting. i use a controller and keep the unit on low. no viberation little but of sound. not nearly as loud as a window ac unit tho.

Mine is as loud as a box fan at Max. But that's at the low setting. At its high setting I'd say it's as loud as when your computer starts really working on something and you're right next to it.

My FFU arrived today. I paid about $600 USD total from a factory in China for a 2x4 ft unit. It didn’t come with a prefilter, but that’s not a big deal.

Buying the same FFU locally would’ve been around $1,200 plus shipping. Most of the cost on this one was actually shipping and duty. The FFU itself was about $150 USD.

It took roughly two months to arrive by sea, and it was shipped in a custom wooden crate that cost around $50 USD.

Overall I'm very happy with this FFU. When I got it onto my desk I had the sudden thought of "What have I gotten myself into, this thing is massive" but hopefully that feeling goes away once it is being used for mush cult :laugh:

It’s been a week now and all 50 plates I poured are still clean.

Since then, I’ve poured another 70 plates, transferred 6 agar wedges to grain jars, and inoculated a grain jar with 10 ml of LC. The G2G transfers I did the day I received my FFU are already close to fully colonised.

I wasn’t having major contamination issues using an SAB, but the FFU makes everything significantly faster and easier in comparison. Bag work is effortless, pouring plates is straightforward, and overall workflow is much smoother.

Strictly speaking, an FFU isn’t necessary and it won’t compensate for poor aseptic technique, but it definitely makes the process more enjoyable and efficient.

My only regret is not getting one sooner.
