I usually start my 4 gallon pots in March and have fruits come Fall with just about every woodlover I've grown. Cyans do better the following year but I've always got something the first season.




Subaeruginosa got pounded by a middle of the night thunder storm over the weekend. This was yesterday. I think I'm going to harvest tonight or tomorrow before the next round hits. Might be a little early to collect spores, but I still have plenty from last year so I'm not too worried. Once she's finished up I think I'll divide this into 2-3 more pots. Plus I have a bag ready to make another lol.

There’s no way to calculate maximum yield. Might as well get to work on making beds and learn for yourself. Nothing beats hands on experience.

I water by how heavy the pot feels. It takes a little practice but once you're in the groove you don't even think about it. Timewise, it varies from daily to weekly with nothing for months in late Fall and Winter thanks to the rains. Just make sure you have good drainage so you don't over water. Don't let some dry chips on top scare you too much either. Things get wetter as you go deeper.
I'd scrape most of the dirt top layer off and let it breathe. A thin layer of leaf mulch and debris will help keep evaporation lower during the dry times.
An established pot is constantly moving from top to bottom. As the bottom becomes digested everything sinks. Every few years I make it a point to slide everything out. Usually there's about six inches of completely composted wood to remove and put in flower beds. I usually split what's left of the colonized chips into two new pots if there's enough. Otherwise, back in the same pot with new fermented chips on top and a thinner layer on the bottom.
I also recommend leaving room to feed it..

which is usually a few inches of chips on top. Room for fruiting to an extent is also nice. I get lots of pests here and an old window screen tops the pots nicely for protection while things are in the pinning stages.
