Agar question?

Do I have to boil agar for it to solidify?

My natural hot water is hot as fuck so I assumed as long as I threw in a stir bar and let it run 5 minutes to dissolve everything I be ok. I poured to 4oz jars.

500ml water
10g agar
7g lme

I'm waiting for it to solidify then PC. It's been about 90 minutes.

from my original post

But I got a few more questions so I'm gonna keep all my agar questions here.

Another question?

So how are you guys pouring agar at 150f?

Maybe I'm being a pussy about this but that bottle is hot as fuck and one was still bubbling. Maybe my laser reader is garbage. I just bought it.

My thoughts is maybe y'all are using a cut proof glove and then a rubber glove over that

I can only imagine how bad this is gonna be accidentally dropping my bottle and it go all over the place. Be worse than 9ish years ago when my dumbass accidentally hit cold water against my freshly brewed liquid culture and that bastard blew up on me . The agar might just be worse if that happens.

If you wait for it to cool down a bit it’s not so burny.
I think around 45-50c is when I start pouring.

Note to self.
Trust the process.
Stop trying short cuts.
Always boil 1st!

Think this is gonna be the gloves I try under my rubber gloves to pour. I can tuck the wrist in and pull glove over it and leave nothing exposed. I'll just make sure to keep it washed and stored in a bag until needed.

Any objections?

If it's too hot to hold, it's too hot to pour. You'll get awful condensation. Just wait a minute!

I presume by now if you are making/pouring your own agar...you've hopefully read about pour temperature, and  pressure cooking this agar for a while as well. If the agar container is still hanging in the pc water, you can just check the temperature of the water, and know what your agar temp is without compromising your agar container.

I use stainless steel sauce cups.
Dimensions: 3" x 3" x 3"
Then I put my rack on top of that and add water until it under the rack.

So what you're saying is I need to add water above the rack?

The reason I haven't is to keep the bottles stable. Or am I overthinking this?

Kinda like this D3 tek

This part worries me. I got glass bottles not pyrex. So maybe I can reheat this route with no chances of it exploding?
Quote:
12. In pot large enough to hold media bottles, heat several inches of water to 140f (60c) or if you own a sous vide this is even better.
13. Carefully remove media bottles from PC, place into pot of water ( this serves two purposes, one it helps cool the bottles down to handling temps and helps keep bottles warm to prevent from setting up while pouring other bottles) move your pot and media bottles to where you will be performing pours.
14. Using a laser temp probe measure the media bottles temperature. I begin pouring once temperature reaches 135-140f (57-60c)

Will these explode from thermal shock if I take them from PC @ 150 f and put them in a cooler temp at say consistent 120 f?

Just nervous after the quart jar 9ish years ago of LC exploded on me. Do to me not paying attention and went to go wash my hands in the sink next to my LC got hit with cold water. Lesson learned the hard way.

Trying to learn as I go and hate learning the hard way.

I'm really trying to get more into this hobby. I got 500 disposable plates, grafting tape and would like to pour roughly 50 to 100 total this week.

I'm confused why you are working with multiple agar bottles before being comfortable with handling / pour temps? Seems overly aggressive for no reason.

Microwave the second bottle when your ready to use it. Make sure to loosen the cap and stop the microwave every 30 seconds or so not to prevent boil over.

Mainly because I'm trying to learn something new. If you don't try you'll never get to your achievements in this hobby.

What's wrong with trying. Worst that can happen is things screw up and you start over. Correct?

Everyone starts some where. Not to mention some people have limited time to get it in ( work, life, etc )

Guess I'm just gonna have to run with trial and error...

I did knock up some liquid cultures. I'll be testing them soon with the 4 oz jars. I just wanted to make sure I gave my 4 oz jars a few days to pull in as much of the condensation.

I know I did that completely backwards. I should have knocked Agar first. Either way I'll the results before I run the LC.

I haven’t looked in on this yet, sorry. I think I answered your exploding bottles question elsewhere.

You don’t need to boil your agar. Some will boil and filter to make crystal clear plates, but it’s a pain in the ass. I put all my ingredients in a media bottle, shake it up, loosen the lid, and PC. Everything will dissolve and melt at PC temps.

Don’t pour until your agar is 120 F or below. Hotter than that and you’ll burn your fingers and get bad condensation. I like using a water bath to cool them quick, but you can just let them sit in the PC. Beware if you set them in cool water or just take them out of the PC to air cool, you got to keep them agitated or the agar along the glass can start to solidify while the center stays liquid because it’s warmer.

You don’t need water above the rack in your PC. You need the minimum amount of water your PC instructions say you must use, don’t want it to go dry, but you don’t need water up the side of the bottles. Mine sit on a trivet with about 0.25” of water up the side, some elevate them out of the water completely. Doesn’t matter. Just don’t vent your PC when the cycle is finished. Let it cool down to 0psi before you open it. If you vent your PC your agar will boil over.

Back to it.
Agar pour day.

Here are the 3 cultures I'm almost 1000% sure they are clean but here in a few days we'll know for sure. I kinda done this backwards because I trust my source so I made LC and brf pucks at the same time. That way I could inoculate my Agar and Pucks back to back after I seen the Agar was clean.

I know I'm jumping the gun but it's more of a time thing atm work wise.

Reheating agar now,and cleaned my area good. Gonna give it another wipe down after my shower and pour plates.

Btw I know light is killing the picture but that's all a cloud/mass of LC where this light is coming through. I'll get better pictures later maybe after I put it on the stir plate.

Late to the party, but after PC'ing my media, and or reheating later, I put my media bottles of agar into a sous vide bath pot set at 130* F, let it stabilize, and pour that.  I use a leather glove to hold the bottle, as 130* is still pretty hot.  130* F would be 54* C.  As long as I work quickly, this works really well.  If I am slow, the last of the bottle can gel up on me.  I'm using 500 ml bottles.  Any cooler and I end up not being able to pour the last third of the bottle.

I'm working in front of a flow hood, and I let the dishes cool in front of the airflow. The airflow may be why I need my starting temp a bit higher than you.  After bagging them up for storage, I store them in upside down, and get little condensation.
