Growing APE in AIO bag
    #29326636 -

I currently have some APEs colonizing in an AIO bag (saw an AIO ad thinking 'oh hey! easy peasy!' but then realized after inoculating that it's not that stupid simple.) I've read all the things (but not all the things) - HHG, surface conditions, monos, rescuing your AIO, search engine tek, and I believe there was also a write up specifically for APE/PE, but it didn't start with an AIO bag... you get the gist. I'm still a bit confused though.

I inoculated this AIO bag with APE LC on July 22 and did a break and shake on Aug 15. It is still colonizing in its bag. I'm giving it natural light and the bag is still completely sealed as it came. I have not and will not be using the heating pad the bag is sitting on in the pictures. Once the bag is fully colonized, should I place it into a tub and put 2 inches of CVG over it? Or should I just keep it in the bag until it fruits? Or should I SGFC or water tub the thing? I read from some of these posts that I should not spawn the colonized material in with CVG because that is pretty much the point of the AOI. But I also read that PE varieties do better with 2 inch casing (would that be different if using AIO bag vs your own grain?). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

That’s fairly well colonised and fine to put into fruiting conditions but I get your conundrum, I’ve done all those options and some definitely work better than others and thankfully most APE varieties these days don’t blob too much so it’s up to you which way you want to go but there’s 2 options I’d suggest over others,
1- leave it in the bag and with a pin prick 2 rows of holes about an inch apart just above substrate level and leave it.
2- (if you’re worried about blobs) cut the bag about 2 inches above substrate level and compress cv to about a thickness of 1-2 inches and place in a small ez dial tub or shoe box, keep an eye on surface conditions as a smaller grow will dry out quicker, I personally just have a small amount of water in the bottom of the tub to maintain humidity, like about 5mm, keep us updated 👍

Edit: I actually wouldn’t go over an inch compressed cv with a bag tbh.

You had mentioned that it looked fairly well colonized, but I picked it up to look this morning (I have not touched it since I break & shaked) and it still looks like there's quite a bit to go, so I wanted to get your opinion before doing anything. These are updated pictures I took this morning of the back and bottoms from each angle. I read that if it wasn't 100% colonized yet, then it would be easy to introduce bacteria if you messed with it. I don't think I should mess with it yet, but I want to get your (or anyone else's) opinion on that first.

Regarding the rest of your response, I like the sound of option 2 better but want to be clear on your instructions because I have been really, really diligent in patience and not touching it and don't want all that to go to waste by doing something wrong. So, I fully cut the bag's top off 2" above substrate level and press 1" CVG into the bag, then put the bag into a shoebox tub (I have 7 qt tubs) with fruiting conditions, correct?

Again, thank you for sharing your knowledge. I am going to go re-read HHG and fruiting conditions now.

All g!
If your grain was fully colonised when you did the break and shake then it’s fine to expose to outside air, when we spawn to tubs it’s in open air and if you saw my house you’d be horrified so don’t stress it.
And yes, do all those things, compress and level your cv pseudo casing to 1 inch, leave the elastic band on to limit side pins but if you find you’re getting a heap and they’re forming fruits then just cut the bag an inch from the bottom and remove the excess, otherwise you’re good to go, that bag looks fine 👍

I'd take off the rubber band and leave the bag sit. It'll fruit when it's ready. You don't need to do anything special.

Only thing i'd recommended is when you start to see some pins, poke a few tiny holes just above the substrate line. And when i say small i mean small. Like pinhole size. 2 on each long side and 1 the short sides.

No need to complicate things.

Hmm, I agree with you 100% - I'm trying to complicate things in my haste to learn. I should've taken a hint when 3.A.M suggested letting it sit as option 1 because people tend to suggest the best option first.

The rubberband has been removed, and I'll patiently wait to see pins. Thank you for your input.

Yeah, 3am made solid suggestions that i agree with. Just throwing my hat in the ring behind option #1.

It's very easy to overcomplicate this hobby. And you can also love them to death.

As far as colonization speed, what temp is the bag working with most of the time?

When i knock up my substrate bags i like to get the sub as settled as possible and then i compress it down. Compressing it down pushes the sub outward and tight against the sides of the bag. That helps reduce side pins a lot to almost nothing for me without the need of any bands around the bag.

I'm actually super glad you threw in your 2 cents because it made me realize that picking someone's first suggestion is probably the smarter route. It was legit an OOOHHH 🤦🏻‍♀️ moment for me.

I bought a hygrometer that says my temp has been ranging at 69°F - 77°F with humidity fluctuating between 47% - 86%. I bought the thing cheap off Amazon though, so not sure how accurate it is. I've read about Inkbird and will probably end up getting one eventually since I travel state-to-state for work and therefore won't really know my temp conditions.

I tried to compress my sub into a block when I broke it, but I don't think I did a very good job because I was scared I was going to put a hole in the bag. When you told me to remove the band, I actually sat there and thought about why you didn't need to use a band and my assumption was right, and that I just need to do a better job of compressing next time.

Question (and I know I'm getting ahead). How do you know when to cut the top of the bag completely off? When it's about time to harvest?

Also, I read and bookmarked your PE tips. I'm sure it will come in super handy in the future so thanks for taking the time to write it for us!

If your temps are ranging between 69-77f that's perfect. No need to do anything else. It's not critical that you know what the temp is at all times. No need to spend money on fancy things that ultimately don't matter much. Unless you enjoy using gadgets like that.

But it can be easy to get carried away on bells and whistles. I know, because i get distracted by bells and whistles too.

In this situation you only want to cut the top of the bag off when it's time to harvest. The bag is your fruiting chamber and holds the humidity for you. So if you poke too many holes or make them too big then the bag will dry out way too fast. Can always add more holes if it looks like theyre suffocating but i doubt that'll be an issue.

I cut the bag at the top of the substrate all the way around and after harvesting i then slide the top of the bag over the bottom substrate part of the bag for 2nd flush.

I spary with some water, put top back on, put back on shelf. Then i harvest 2nd flush when it's ready. No need for poking more holes or anything.  And when i slide the top back on i slide it like halfway or more down the bottom bag. Like it's on there on there. Not just resting on top.

And that PE writeup is getting some age on it now. Maybe i should revisit and revise some. Not like i think it needs much.

But, it's really just some suggestions that can possibly help one reduce blob production. Which it's also not the only option. And there's always gonna be some variables based on individual circumstances.

But those suggestions i wrote up can potentially help. Hope it works for you

Your bag explanation is connecting some puzzle pieces for me. I did a ton of searches on posts about AIO bags before posting. Most of what was being asked were about contam or moving it to some other tek (which is why I thought I had to), but also noticed that a ton of them were dry af. And wondered why Beef did the AOI rescue writeup if AIO bags weren't really his main tek. The booklet that comes with the AIO bags say to create a slit once it's colonized, and then to cut the top halfway off (hoodie) once the pins start showing. I'm not sure I've read about anyone having any success doing it this way, but my friend did it and his dried out. I probably would've had the same fate had I not gone down this rabbit hole (I also started at Reddit 😬).

I got some very valuable tips here today, from both of you. I'll keep you guys updated when things start looking different! Thank you x a million!

Those instructions sound like a great way to dry it out and not get fruits

I had a close look at my bag today and it looked a little wet. I sprayed some gloves with alcohol and gently slid my finger on the bag, and you can see in the pics there's a bit of water pooling. I personally want to leave it alone, but also want to make sure this isn't too much moisture and I that I can leave it alone.

It's fine. No need to wear iso'd gloves when touching the outside of the bag though,  super overkill

Ok, still patiently waiting for 100% colonization (or even pins) but noticed that it now looks like white bally things are there. Also, I know APEs are slow, but should it be THIS slow? Pics of the white balls and the bottom that still hasn't fully colonized. Still have not poked any holes in the bag. Conditions are 59-77°F with 47-86% humidity.

Have you done a break&shake?

Duuuude that's like a month ago, unless it looks bacterial, give it another breake&shake

I KNOW!! It's been a grueling test of patience! And I've been wanting to break & shake again but read that it could introduce bacteria. But alas, I have "approval" to do so. Thank you!

It can't introduce bacteria, but it most certainly can spread it if it's already present.

And just so you know, APE can be slow to pin after sending it to bulk, but as far as I know, colonization in jar or bag should be normal cube rate. And yes, I'll take this one, if the breake&shake fucks you over, send me a :pm: and we'll work it out :hatsoff:
