So I didn't consider this till now, but I have an accidental FAFO going.  All my stasis library is packed away in a box, sitting in a storage unit with no temp control.  I won't be able to get to it any time soon either.  Looks like I have an unintentional stress test going for cultures in cryovials, fingers crossed!

Tree frog! Welcome back!

I was waiting to update so you'd have a chance to see it so here we are.



That guy got trich after the first flush, probably cause a coconut shell is far from an ideal condition for it but it looked cool in pictures :shrug:



Then there's these 2 that I'm soaking for a 5th flush. All the fruits have been pretty small and its got me wondering if it's just because there's not a ton of water in the cakes to support big flushes or if the nutrition has something to do with it.

Either way, still no coconut flavor :sad:

Dude!  That coconut shell is amazing though. Like I would assume that was AI generated or something if I didn't know better.

Sig worthy imo, even if the fruits didn't get to the size you wanted.

A couple of my experiments were a bust which is to be expected when doing fafo.

Hominy was not loved aside from the chlorocystis.  And it turns out the antioxidants in popcorn are probably antifungal.  So blue popcorn was a bust, and I assume red would be too.  Not a total bust but slow like wheat.

I picked Nichrome's brain about this a little bit, and while there are ways to make blue and red popcorn work, namely spiking the pH up and making sure you remove the red and blue. It's really not worth the effort since yellow and white work well.  Nich said red millet was also a struggle. But it makes me wonder if my red wheat would do better if I boiled it on pH 8 or 9 water.

Some other stuff worked better and will probably make it into my SOP.  Playing around with better drainage in my substrate for pans, in the form of perlite.  The idea being that this will prevent anaerobic conditions and allow me to use substrates thicker than 3 in.

And worm castings appear to be a great amendment for casings.  Once I get those recipes dialed in a little better I will post them.  My experiment was 2:1:1 peat: limestone: castings by weight.  But I'll tweak this to include gypsum pellets for pH stability.  Probably 4:2:1:1.

I set 4 of my dreamer tubs up to grow some cubes. Temps will be 75°f and 80% Humidity. Running 4 tubs of Charlie Brown, 2 tubs of Squat Mack, and 2 tubs of Tidal Wave. All on oats 1 quart spawn to 2 quarts coir with 2 quarts coir sudo casing all smashed down nice and tight. I will get better pics when I return home, currently in Chihuahua Mexico for work.

I have a wild ochra f1 germinating that was fruited in a pan tent.  Planning to run them in dreamers this go too!

I got tired of not being able to see well in my SAB. So I burned and sanded a new hole, and used a petri lid as the cover to my new port hole. Sealed with micropore tape on the outside. Honestly I'm pretty excited about it, but am adding a potential vector for contamination. Time to fuck around and find out :rofl:

Can’t buy more tubs rn, but I got a lot of oyster buckets and some micropore tape. 3 handfuls of straw and 3 qts of spawn on the bottom, top layer is 1in of coir. Let’s see what happens :mushroom2::stoned:treasure coast and yeti, 2 buckets of each

I didn't know this thread existed, very cool! This is a fruiting tent that I've had success with. It uses a bucket heater for heat and humidity. I'm about to fire it up again for some Cambos, courtesy of treefrog.

Long term: Trying to borrow elements from juice & Bioethanol making in order to hopefully devise a means of deriving bulk LC from the clarification of potato juice by treatment with amylase, pectinase and gelatin of the uncooked juices.

Short term: Invert sugar as a culture medium.

I've been trying to see if I can grow cubes without sterilization. Just as a challenge project, or to find a way that might be possible for people to use if they didnt have access to electricity.

I found that mycelium grows readily in very low nutrient LC without needing sterilization. I germinate spores in water with just a drop of honey. Honey is great to use because it contains a very low endospore content. The amount it grew with such little nutrition surprised me. With just a small amount of honey added after this, it could grow out cultures without any signs of yeast or bacteria. Total sugar content less than 1%.

Every project in which I tried to use grains in any way contaminated. (Even low-dose grain LC, contaminates in a way honey never would've.) But I put them all in a tub of moist soil outside. That was several months ago. Every failed project put in the soil. Now, where there was mold in culture, it got overtaken by mycelium. There it is persisting and spreading despite Trichoderma in the same environment.

My plan is to take all the mycelium pieces I see and put them in bags with moist cardboard and hay. Maybe in those environments this mycelium, which already has beat the school of hard knocks in soil, will start to take off.

I tried spores to cardboard, cube myc seemed to have a real problem germinating on that. But maybe if I made an LC first and let it grow out on less than 1% honey, I could then inoculate something like hay or cardboard that is more contam resistant. Perhaps a spawn could be prepared by infusing something very low nutrition with honey, like coir and 4% honey. Keeping honey higher than in the LC but still low enough that the mushroom can consume it.

Run out of agar and grain but still want to grow some mushrooms? Got a bag of frozen French fries in the freezer? Well now you can with Pomme Frite Tek.

Sterilise your defrosted French Fries and inoculate to produce Frygar™ or Fry Spawn™. Defrosted fries on the bottom, cooked on the top.



Incubate. The mycelium turned up its nose at the cooked fries and who could blame it. They're overdone.



Defrosted fries are delicious though, apparently.





Wait until your Frygar™ is fully colonised.



Then plant the cake intact in bulk substrate and let it colonise.



When fully colonised introduce fruiting conditions.



FROOTS!



Not a bad yield from three French Fries. :grin:

Alright.

Invert sugar + nutritional yeast works.
Unfortunately I'm an idiot so it contammed but the theory seems to work albeit not that amazingly.

New FAFO: Low temperature gelatinizion of grain to improve the intactness of protective layers. Basically hold it at 50 C/135 F for a few hours rather than winging it followed by cold drying as per Beef's Tek. In theory this should make all the starches 100% available to fungus while ambient pathogens are basically gonna be completely overwhelmed. Due to the deliberate maximization of undercooking it'd probably completely fail to colonize with MS unless you put a whole syringe in there since it'd be so horrendously dry and hard you'd need fungal mycelium to already be present.

A second round would be dry gelatinization in a bag for 12 hours followed by a 30 minute soak.

Two more great posts!

I'm glad folks are finding their way to this thread, currently I'm experimenting with homemade bioflower.

Which is a pre-made soil for cannabis that's popular with some of my friends.

The ratios I'm using to mimic it are 4:4:1:1 peat:coir:biochar:perlite.  Some calcium carbonate to balance out the peat.  And Mojave liquid nutrients for the NPK and micronutrients.

I ran this with a CV+ control. Unfortunately I'm not a big fan of liners, and I didn't compress the substrate very well. So the bioflower side pinned a lot :lol:

But it did pin a lot faster, and it was a split jar.  The CV+ contaminated after two flushes and the bioflower is on flush three.

So if I can work out the side pinning issue so that I get good yield out of it it seems to be contamination resistant and improve pin speed, at least in Copelandia.

It is quite a bit of prep, but there is a product that folks can buy if they have more money than time.

I will update some of that as I go along.
