Using charcoal in substrate?
    #1384699 - 03/17/03 04:10 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

Wouldn't this contribute to the health of the cake? If one were to take some hardwood ashes and sift, one could easily obtain some decent charcoal that could be ground into a fine powder. One could then hydrate the charcoal and use it in place of vermiculite.

And while we are on that subject, why not use charcoal to case, as well?

Think of the advantages:

1. Dark color would aid in identifying colonizing mycelium.

2. Low nutrient content; little chance of contamination.

3. Excellent water absorbtion.

4. Slightly alkaline.

5. Cheap.

6. Sterile.

Has anyone experimented with the idea?

Don't think that has been tested yet... but feel free to be a pioneer.

Does anyone feel this would be worth experimenting with?

seeing how i just looked at my garden full of charcoal (where i empty my stove into when it fills up) and was wondering about this for shrooms, the answer is yes. I think its a great idea.
the carbon would hopefully be in an available form for the mycelium network to use. i'd be concerned about the overall ph though.

good thought!
a foaf has his first WBS incubating right now, maybe i'll mix some in before I case it

good luck bigJ - good to see the ideas flowin

personally, i'd only use it if i couldn't get vermiculite, which is ideal for it's purposes.
charcoal, if ideally chosen, may work as a substitute in times of need.

Well, you can balance the ph by using ph up or down in the water.

i think the point of was by adding something to the mix that is alomst totally pure carbon it would increase the available carbon content for the mycelium.. C:N ratio n all that..
but yeah otherwise i'd just mix in some aditives
