Possible newbie question... Charcoal as casing material

I'm getting into the hobby in the future, and before I do so, I want to do all me reading. I'm planning on skipping PF Tek, and going straight to H-Poo. I'm building a Laminar Flow Hood.... from everything I've read, it seems like it'll be well worth the investment of $200 and a few hours of my time to put it together to get that level of sterility.

The area where I still don't have me tek 100% nailed down is with the casing. Is there a reason no one uses charcoal as a casing material? It's highly porous, sterile, and nutrient free. Not to mention it comes in a variety of sizes. I'd think think small pieces of charcoal mixed with vermiculite at a near 50/50 ratio would make an excellent casing material, but I could be way off. Does charcoal lack the neccesary water retention? I'd bet it actually wouldn't be too bad once boiled, given it's porosity.

Anyways, just a thought. I'm a complete newbie at this, so I thought I'd ask the pros.

I think it might be too heavy. And I hope you mean the activated carbon as in fishtank filters, not charcoal as in the delicious cooking fuel.


Nice on skipping the PF tek. I've had nothing but troubles with PF Tek (first tek ever tried), but since I started on grain2spawn, it's been much better.

you need to worry about basics before you try to get all crazy mad scientist on us...... i wouldnt worry with a 200 dollar flow hood if you're just starting off.... that money could be used for other usefull things like rubbermaids and birdseed....... take 15 dollars and make a "glovebox" and get a 5 dollar can of OUST air sanitizer and have at it...... people that have been at it for a while like to go the extra mile and get everything as perfect as they can but you CAN have success with simple and affordable methods that are presented for you on this website....... follow the instructions and you'll see ........ read grasshoppa!!!! no charcoal ever!!!!!!!!!!!
