Its fun and not that difficult. Especially with a sous vide pasteurizing poo or peat is easy peasy

I used to do it in a big tray in the oven.
Theres also a tek for doing it in a pc that i never dialed in

Pasteurization isn’t hard, it’s just another process to learn.

I’ve got pins right now in my latest pan tub, and not one bit of the substrate I used was pasteurized, including the casing.

Now we’ll see if it dies lmfao, but if not then I’ll be chuffed. To be honest I don’t like pasteurizing. Liquid fert sub and jiffy mix casing 🤞

I bought one of these specifically for pasteurizing subs:



You set the temperature at 150ish and then go to bed. At least in theory. I'm trying it out next week.

I failed at my first 3 rounds of pans, and only got 1.7g from my 4th run. It is challenging. Just accept that you won't be successful out of the gate. It helps that I tend to have to brute force my way to success in everything in life. Nothing comes easy to me. Just roll with it.

You could also just colonize bags invitro and slap a top layer/proper casing on depending on what youre growing

Except I'd say it's the least privileged position to be in.  Anyone who has managed people has used politics behind the scene, whether for evil against their own staff, or cultivating a self-actualized workforce, and anything in between.  Most managers are at least half-incompetent (Peter Principle), and use force as a tool.  This is why we need more women in management, and yes I'm a binary male, although some women can be just as guilty by making decisions emotionally.

"Eating turds" is telling me that you haven't found valid and reliable sources of information.  For many decades the distributed and merit-based nature of the Associated Press has been my main source, and in the '70's we in intel had a direct feed from AP to a teletype.

I ate a large dose of edibles Sunday and passed out at 4pm. Woke up at 2am and had word at 6am so I decided to spawn 10 more shoeboxes 😂

Compsted isnt neccesary, but field aged is. You dont want it fresh, you want it plenty dry. Coir helps with texture regardless, but Horse poo is a great texture on its own. Cow poo definitely needs some coir and or verm or its sloppy on account of the 4 stomach chambers

Super easy intro to pasteurization, I put my sub into ziplock bags, flattened them, and ran them in the dehydrator as well.

Herbivores don't digest the vegetation they eat for the most part.  They digest the microbiome which digests the vegetation they eat.  The output contains gastric juices, fiber, and a floral bouquet of yeast, fungi, bacteria, virii, etc.  Field aging essentially washes away not just digestive juices but also much of this microbiota.  Mushrooms grow in the in-between stages.

Composting encourages the wholesome microbiota to break down offensive material and makes nourishing byproduct.

Oh field aging makes a scaffolding for myc like coir, but poo-loving mushrooms like the nourishment of the microbiota, sez I.

But I'll, do me.

Im seriously considering the AOI jars. IIRC, the grain and sub was all hydrated and sterilized together - I wonder how well it would work to use grain spawn for an innoculant. 🤔

From what I've seen, the sous vide would pretty well eliminate my anxieties, but I think I saw they're over $100 and I'm kinda strapped. And sugar mama been buying me too much shit lately and I dont wanna ask. 🤣

I'll be alright though- just anxious about it. Fear of failure is almost more intense than the fallout of failure. I was just on the phone with my gf and told her the same thing I said here and she just said "you've done fine so far and you can't learn until you try." which is pretty much all there is to say about it. Appreciate y'all. ❤️🤙

Which reminds me - I think I saw someone using their air fryer combo for this. I know we've discussed that not being suitable for dehydrating fruits, but the last time I ran, I added a thermometer to monitor temp and it held a steady temperature anyway. I wonder if a few jars on their side would do the trick.

You could certainly do the g2g method with sending colonized grain > aio jar. Tree Frog has an AIO jar writeup.

Air fryer idea is creative and new to me. If temp holds steady then that is a cool tool. If jars are awkward, maybe a plastic oven bag would be suitable?

You got a lot of options, you'll find one that agrees with your mind and schedule

No need to disagree, you just taught me some shit, thanks :highfive:

All i knew prior to you sharing this is fresh poo is too hot for mushrooms. Let the stink fade and itll hold all the water your mushrooms need. And let them access it.  Im not fully convinced that field aged poo lacks a microbiome, but im sure you could get me there.

I do have one question -

The beneficial microbes in poo are why we pasteurize it instead of sterilize it.

Xactly.  Pasteurization temp kills the lower-temp nasties giving the higher temp-tolerant beneficials a fighting chance.  Notice a compost heap is warm to hot?  This is the beneficials making heat to help.

Also, after pasteurization it's a good idea to let the compost consolidate for a couple days before using, so the beneficial microbes can join forces and build up their defenses. (Credit: tree frog)
