Blue footed LBM from Ohio
    #2913729 - 07/21/04 08:07 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

I found two of these tiny mushrooms today on a fallen log alongside a stream in the Wayne National Forest, in Ohio.

Caps: 1 to 2 cm in diameter, smooth, grayish brown to light brown.

Stripes: 1 to 3 cm long, 1 to 2 mm thick, light brown, fragile, fuzzy blue mycelium at base.

Gills: adnexed(maybe notched), unequal, dull whitish brown.

Spores: White

No noticeable color change after bruising.

Smell: indistinct

Taste: I didn't taste because I wanted to save both tiny caps for spore print.

At first I thought I had finally found caerupiles, but these seem too small.

Can anyone ID, make an educated guess, or just steer me in the right direction?

Thanks a million

Not a psilocybe- but still not sure. I'm not gonna guess at it though- I thought I'd bump this so someone would try it out- I'm rather suprised no one has tried wiht such an accurate description. I'd love to ID but I'm out of my mind on pure MDMA and I can't find any of my books so no way Jose. Really neat Shroomydan.

That's not it Alsius for 2 reasons:

Habitat: Scattered in grassy areas and fields.

Distribution: Oregon, Washington and British Columbia, Canada.

His were growing from wood, in Ohio.

Perhaps it's Pluteus salicinus?

http://images.google.com/images?q=Pluteus%20salicinus&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&sa=N&tab=wi

This mushroom is considered rare in the US, but hey... ya never know.

Their general appearance plus growth from wood supports the idea that they are Pluteus.

Hapy mushrooming!

I just checked the spore print. It looks like something is there, not sure, but if it is there, then it is white. I should have put one on black paper. Duh  I used up my 400k this mouring uploading edible finds. asap i will post more pictures and will check the spore print again tomorrow afternoon; I have class all mourning. I'm afraid the mushrooms died on the way out; it was about 4 hours between the time when I picked them and when I put them on the waxed paper. I put them uder a glass alongside a wet paper towl to increase the humidity. I'm going to bed  be back tommorow.

i seem to have heard something about the blueing mycenas aswell, but in my early mshroom hunting days i used to occasionally find similar mushrooms ohio [slightly more robust in stature, in hocking hills area] that i concluded to be of the genus pluteus due to the spore print. those, while thin, seem to fit in the genus. if they drop a pink print, this will confirm.

i recommend printing on black and white paper [or other smoothe surface] to be sure they are not dropping a white print. this would suggest Mitch was correct.

[edit: i completely missed your last post, this is a little redundant  :smirk:]

[post edit edit: the certainly do look more mycenoid the more i look at them, but then so do some volvariaellas.]

Spore print is definitely white. I suspected that these might be mycenas, but I still have no idea what species. I checked Arora's key to Mycena but found no mention of the blue fuzzy base.

I thought that the mycenas that had blue color were head- to toe blue, not just at the site of the mycelium. That seems odd to me. Similarly, regarding the "if they were pluteus salicinus" conversation earlier, would there have even been enough active comppound(s) in the said pluteus to cause a blueing reaction? I thought that they were only weakly active. Has anyone ever experimented with pluteus for... um.. research?

as i said, in the hocking hills area of ohio, there are blueing pluteus species, which i have long presumed to be P. salicinus or close.

The white spore print coupled with the attached gills I believe rules out pluteus. Are the bluing mycens active?
