Blue Foot? Psilocybe caerulipes?
    #1590152 - 05/29/03 08:09 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I am a few days old at this, so naturally I need all the help I can. I live in A boggy region of Maine where there are a lot of pines and birch. The Blue Foot I have read like these conditions and should be in my area as of August to October( a little early?), according to information found within this site. Not much info on this mushroom in general other that a picture and the basics. not popular?. Hopfully someone knows a thing or two about this one, do I have the real deal here? I found two mushrooms that look Identical, I haven't posted the other pics of the ones I found because there spores are white. However the pictures you see below are of the ones I suspect to be Blue Foots. The spore prints, my first at that, where done on a clear plastic, however no picture came out. The color of the spores where dark brown.

Also I don't know if my crappy pictures show it or not but the tops of this mushroom look almost furry in a way, like I said I am a few days old at this so bear with my ignorance.

Hard to say what they are but they are definitely not Psilocybe caerulipes(bluefoot). If your serious about finding this mushroom you need to do lots of reading up. Its one of the most elusive Psilocybes I know of in North America,

LK,

I forgot to add that it did not stain blue.
I have read that it doesn't always either.

If anyone out there on the east coast has a copy of Alexander H. Smith's Field Guide to Eastern USA mushrooms. There is a photo of P. caerulipes in it. His Western guide had a pictuee of P. pelliculosa in it. I used the Pelliculosa picture and I found liberty caps in the pasture, although they are similar they are macroscopically different aw they are similar.

Figure that one out.

I've seen a photo of P.caerulipes by A.H.Smith, but unfortunately it was a black and white picture. MJ posted some pics here of what appeared to be caerulipes. Just go to the search engine, type in Psilocybe caerulipes, and under user name, mjshroomer, and check those posts. The pics are there somewhere. You'll need to go back about a year to find'em.
I find it interesting that this species has such a large distribution range (from Canada to Mexico), has a fairly broad habitat, yet very few people seem to find the damn things.
It's my guess that it's a typical, common looking LBM, that's easy to overlook in the leaves, mulch , and undergrowth. IDing mushrooms ain't easy. Especially, little brown mushrooms that grow on wood. Keep looking, those bastards are out there somewhere.
What we need is for MJ to come out East, and team up with GG and LK and put 'em on the hunt for the elusive blue-foot. If they can't find 'em, the damn things must be extinct or something.
