Pictures would help. What did you get with the kit?

This lie about Nats eating mold has to stop.

People run with bs here way too much.

Conjecture gets taken as fact and everyone just agrees out of lack of knowledge.

Question the facts.

I have to disagree on the nats don't eat mold though and I agree on questioning facts...

None, absolutely zero species cultivated here are parasitic, none. No exceptions.

Define parasitic? Whatever the myc does, the end result is what I described. Could be that mold spores die or lose color naturally? I can't deny what I saw and my experience with natalensis spawn and localized mold spores.

Here's a couple of pictures with everything I received in the "all in one" kit and a few additional suggested supplies. Please let me know if these don't suffice and I'll try to provide better pics if needed.

Thx!

Am I seeing right that you have a bag of pc'd grain with nothing added, coir, liquid inoculant/culture and something else?

The kit will be designed such that you inject the grain bags with the spore syringes, wait for them to colonise over 2-4 weeks then mix that with the coco coir substrate, which you have on the left.

It is possible to grow mushrooms this way but unlikely to be successful due to the fact the spore solution is not totally sterile. Mushroom spores are harvested in open air which allows mold spores to sneak in. The mold will colonise the bag faster than the mushrooms if it is present in the syringe.

I tried with a kit first and got nothing but contamination. Most people would recommend PF TEK as the easiest way to grow mushrooms: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24179086

And the Hitchhikers guide to start to learn all the key skills: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/28501530

If you want to be safe, learn to use agar, inoculate an agar plate with the syringe to get a sterile culture then inoculate the grain bags with this.

Remember blobs are active...

Also fruits can emerge from blobs (with some varieties)...

Whats the highest amount of sub you've used?

Might just need to go back to spores if all else fails.

Highest amount of spawn to sub ratio was probably a 1:1 or 1:1.5. I got this idea from PGT'S video on how to S2B and he said just eyeball it. Looked like he barely used any sub at all so I did the same. I try to standardize my quarts of spawn and sub by measuring out 500g for each quart jar. I just made my first shoebox tonight of iceberg and decided to up the ratio to 1:2.75. Almost 1:3 but I wanted to leave space for fruiting. I've only ever used liquid culture. Don't have spores to go back to. Guess I'll have to learn agar.

So save the blobs during harvest and treat them like fruits. Should I remove everything all at once? Or remove anything close to a torn veil and leave pins to mature? Should I case again after harvest and soak?

Do yourself a favor and unplug from PGT. Not someone you want to look towards for advice.

You want your ratio to be 1:2-1:4, generally speaking. If the spawn is clean. I stick to 1:3 for most applications. Compress your substrate and give it a top layer as well. Very firmly compress it.

Yes pick your blobs, those are keepers. Given how little sub you used, I’d cross my fingers and rehydrate, but I wouldn’t expect much more from this grow. Pick it all and chuck it is what I’d do

Start your next project using resources here 👌

Thank you. Whenever I thought about using 1:3, I had some doubt because visually it looked like the grains were spread out so few and far in between the substrate, I believed the ratio was off so I stuck to a 1:1. But I think I'm beginning to understand the importance of water and that having a high spawn to sub ratio doesn't equal out to higher yields. I'm beginning to understand this balance. I just made my first shoebox and used a 1:3 so let's see how that goes. I will try to flush these trays out a few more times as I was able to get normal flushes after a similar incident. In the mean time enjoy some pics of this blobby yield. The Iceberg blobs plucked off like grapes off a vine. They looked like beautiful little clouds with touches of sky blue. Never seen anything like it. They also seemed to cover incoming normal looking pins. Wanted to smash them between some Graham crackers and chocolate.

You might get lucky but I wouldn't count on it. Hitchhikers guide really is the best comprehensive source of information. If what you have is a liquid culture, not liquid inoculant or in other words not spores suspended in sterile water, then you may even have a good chance but that what I said with a grain of salt. I have no experience with grow kits or open air inoculation.

Mycelium may or may not be able to affect mold spore pigmentation, I don't know. What I do know is that Psilocybe genus doesn't parasitize/exploit molds, bacteria, or other fungal species for food. It doesn't "eat" any of those things. However, we've all watched myc breakdown pigmentation from food dyes in agar. Can Nats or other Psilocybe do the same with melanin...

They don't eat mold.

Edit: I was eating a Blueberry Muffin with my coffee from Tim's as I wrote that

Ok, good deal. I basically watched a few videos on YT and sort of went from there as it seemed easy enough. I knew there was a chance of false starts etc. so I'll check out the tutorials you suggested and go from there.

Thanks again for the advice!

Point taken. It looks like natalensis eats the pigmentation or affects the color of mold spores in some way. Remains to be seen if the mold spores are still viable after losing color. At the very least the mold spores seem to be isolated well and nat myc aggressively pursues such behavior in my observation driven opinion.

Edit: blueberry muffins are good. Stipe knows what he's talking about!

Before and after. This is cubensis. It's not nearly as good as nats at this but sure looks like it's trying

It doesn't eat or change the pigment it covers it , resistance to contams doesn't mean a species fights contams and wins it simply means it has a higher chance of putting up some fruits
Much will cover mold spores reaching over it it will do thos across bacteria as well , put it under the scope you'll still see bacterial rods ect

I did some quick research. It doesn't appear as though Psilocybe is capable of exploiting melanin. The picture he showed doesn't look like anything other than mycelium obscuring the view, as you just mentioned.

Brown, probably bacterial, spots on small mushies, probably from over-misting from what I've read. OK to eat the stems raw? :crazy2:

This is P. Natalensis Strain I transfer Agar to Grain and i see a fast Growth is this Natalensis specific?

Why are there a dozen wedges in each jar?  Just carefully transfer one very clean wedge in and leave it at that.  You're inviting contamination with so much activity over an open jar.

I'm going to do this in all caps so it is very clear:

SHROOMS DO NOT DEFEAT CONTAMINATION OF ANY KIND.

Once your plate, spawn, or spawned sub is contaminated it is contaminated.  It's done, yeet it into the sun.  The only contaminated grain I spawn is bacterial, and then I top fruit.

Shrooms do not defeat mold.

Shrooms do not defeat bacteria.

CLEAN SPAWN ONLY.

You right i transfer way to many half a Petri Dish in small pieces and when you say it it's clear that's not good i try too makes thinks quicker end end up with more time  I let this Jar running and make a new smaller Jars with Grain and transfer again after colonized i transfer G2G to a Bigger Jar that's what i will do with less Agar.. Hoe many Pieces?

Don’t forget about the caps. I see no reason why you shouldn’t eat them raw.
Well, except for the fact that all mushrooms should be cooked and prepared properly that is, but that’s a discussion for another thread.

From what I can see, they’re good.
I’ve seen both those spots and damage on caps from exposure to heavy and direct misting early in the fruiting stage.
Someone with more experience might want to confirm the latter, but those are my two cents.

In the middle of my first attempt ever to grow.

I'm using Lizard King in PF Tek jars w/ rice flour & vermiculite. I've started with 3 jars with 1cc, 1.5cc and 2cc.

It's been over 2 weeks and while I'm seeing growth (not yet 50%) it seems very slow.

Can it take weeks and is there a point that I just move to fruit?

TIA

Well, ideally you want to include pics with a q like that. When I started with PF Tek yes it took more than 2 weeks to colonize the cakes.

Yes it always takes weeks and you move to fruit when it is 100% colonized

Personal preference on that one.  Everyone's got a reason why their harvest way is the best but far as I can tell
