This tray was only half a qt of bvi popcorn spawn.  Substrate was hemp, compost, and coir.  (About 1:1:4).  1/4c (dry volume) germinated wheat grass.  (I tried more and less wheat grass but this did the best).

I think the surface conditions could support larger fruits.

Any thoughts on dialing in the compost and spawn ratios?  Was considering one qt of spawn per tray and bumping the compost up to 30% or 50%.  I ended up dialing things way back after noticing mutant flushes from to much nutrition.  Always trying to find the sweet spot.

Is anyone else using compost? I think sleepydave said he was.  Not manure.  Just compost.

Edit:  Here's a comparison with half as much wheat grass, everything else the same.

Side-by-side picture with the 1/8 cup wheatgrass tray.

And a side view of the 1/8 cup.

It's a day behind because of lighting conditions, but you can see how much fuller the pin set is on the tray with a 1/4c.

More wheatgrass than this made cobweb mold a problem.

Yeah, went back to manure briefly, but since switching to cvg + compost I havent really moved away from that as my goto for long.  But so many variables at play, and as my compost further evolves I am certain I will have to continually monitor and adjust as needed in the cvg blend.

I definitely still get some overnuted mutants from time to time, and just dial back the compost by 5-10% (of previous addition by weight, to be clear) depending on severity.  But I think that may be more from cultivar sensitivity to high nutrition.  Im currently at just a hair over 25% compost as my f/h acids were way too hot (nutrition heavy) initially to use higher.  Had to find that out the hard way, but as things mellow over time, it's easier and easier to increase.

Some just flat out act mad in a nutritious sub.  Usually overlaps with the cultivars I can run 50g spawn for tray almost double a standard 13x9.  I usually tend to do about 200g per doublesized tray.

I like the cover crops for holding surface conditions for a few inches as opposed to just the surface.  I have found my outdoor bisporus is much more likely to pop up in grassed spots than in non.  I think that could be really beneficial to non-tent growers especially.

I've been using compost from the bin for the last handful of runs also, spawning more to it now as well (bisporus)...been using a mixture of coir/verm + compost and also straight compost.  So ratios have been as low as 25%ish up to 100%....my last run of ttbvi seemed the happiest and fullest first flush I've pulled yet.

Compost is mostly coffee grounds, fruit/veggies skins, hwfp, and egg shells.  I switched to hwfp rather than dry leaves but i believe i need some dialing in and maybe some direction here, as in I'm not really getting that black crumbly product that i read i should be getting.  It's a work in progress, but maybe I'm thinking I'm over doing the hwfp and also not letting age quite long enough.

Appreciate it!

The actual ratios were two qt hemp, two qt compost, half block canna coir.  It made about four gallons of substrate.

Which is more like 0.5, 0.5, 3, or about 12.5% compost so I'll try doubling it.

I'm running 13 x 9s so I'll shoot for 100g spawn.  Are you using dry weight or wet for spawn?  Popcorn holds it's weight in water.  So a 1/4 cup dry would hit about 100g wet.  Or 1/2 cup dry if using dry weight.

I made a batch of half strength liquid fertilizer in a quart of rain water and dunked that tray with it after harvesting while I went and grabbed coffee.  The wheat grass drinks a lot of water and I've been side watering heavily throughout these grows.

@stagger appreciate your data point as well!

I tried some runs with hardwood fuel pellets, not composted, in all in one bags that got sterilized.  They all contaminated.  I don't think pans do well with breaking down lignin.  They seem a lot less gregarious in that regard than psilocybe species.  That's also why I'm using popcorn.  Avoiding grain hulls.

Can I jump in and ask about the composting? And any write ups that y’all may have done to assist in the comprehension of it? We are still pasteurizing the compost, correct?

I'm using purchased compost (blue ribbon).  It's municipal that our local compost company works with.

We have a garden pile too and worm bins but they end up somewhat inconsistent because we don't stay on top of them.

During my experiments I noticed the black kow consistently ran better for me than horse manure.  The manure seemed too nutritious. This is my first run with the municipal.

I believe sleepydave is using his own compost.

I'm still pasteurizing but for something aggressive like BVI I bet it could be skipped.  I also prep like 4 gallons total substrate at a time (coir included) and spend several weeks using it, so pasturization makes sure that stuff stays good until I'm ready to use it.

I'm still pasteurizing, at least until I get through these current projects doing things by the book.

I botched a couple of my last cyan boxes by switching to a cactus soil casing last minute.  The brand I have isn't worth the time to sift it all out and I should've stuck with either jiffy or my own peat/verm mix.  Kinda fucked up what I could've added towards my compost opinion.

I've also separated my last batch pulled from the bin and added straw to some and let the rest sit as is.  I'll draw from these containers over the next months and tweek as I go.

Hey all! After receiving mislabeled spores like three times I've finally got some actual pan spores. I'm not sure what's good and bad though, so how are we looking?

Are these cased already?  If so, the puffy ones should be in fruiting before they overlay.  Assuming the puffy ones are BVI?  Aside from that they're looking good!

Looks funky.

Probably good if it's BVI.

Funky.

Basically the same down the line.  Early bruising like this has always contaminated when I spawned it.  I think I posted some popcorn jars a couple of months ago of bispo I was thinking were good that looked like that and they all contaminated before flusing.  But the fluffy white marshmellow stuff is a very common morphology for BVI so those ones look good imo.

You can give them a late shake and see how they do on recovery but the bruised ones look sus to me.

No BVI, I have wezas, bispos, and MIB but was drunk while putting lc to grain and forgot to label lol. Haven't added any casing yet.

Will toss the funky ones.

I haven't run wezas and MiB, but Cyan myc can definitely look like that on popcorn.  I have bunnel running now, and it's a lot less fluffy than the bvi I've ran.  But it could just be the expression from MS.

BVI has been consistently marshmallows

Well I'm about to find out how long jars of rye can sit once they were PC'd.
Just knocked up 2 jars that I PC back in January and will see if they do anything. I had 4 I was going to use but the other 2 managed to mold.

Been 3 days now and not seeing any growth so the Rye may be too dry. Thought perhaps my LC went bad but I always make new LC from the old when I use it and the new LC jar has taken off like a bat out of hell, so the culture is still good.

Interesting, I wasn't expecting the mic to be this thick, it's almost thicker than my natalensis overlay. Always figured pan myc would be more delicate and whispy.

Thank you for your help tree frog.

Bisporus is consistently very wispy.  It looks like cobweb mold but without as long of hyphaes and much slower moving.

The first tub you posted I thought was likely Bisporus, but you had only mentioned Cyans in your first post

I did just shake some Bispo on popcorn.  It has some slight bruising.  I'm sus of my own jars but will see how they recover.  But I also pulled out the MS plate and will take new transfers in case it's no good.

And you're welcome!  I hope you get some good fruits.  Be patient with the Bispo, and give it time with the casing is my advice.  It can take awhile to pin.  But is worth the wait in my opinion.

I notice pans seem to be a bit slower on agar and some people seem to put the agar plate to grain before it’s fully colonized the plate. Is this ok? Surely you’d want to to be close to the edge of the plate but that could take quite a while.

Slower on agar? What nutrient strength is your agar? And what variety of pan are we working with here?

I've only worked with 3 varieties of pan but they have all been pretty dam quick on agar, weza being the slowest but still a tad faster than cubes.

For some reason I was under the impression that bispos were a strain of pan cyans XD

I'm happy to give them as much time as they need, if I've learned anything from these little journeys it's patience

Any tips on when exactly I should case?

Panaeolus Bisporus is a different specie. They're not a strain of pan cyans.

Regarding growing Pan bisporus,

Hello there,I haven't made a post on this thread in a few years-I hope this information isn't too outdated since I did this grow 6 years ago.
I have a couple of pics of bisporus mycelia on agar- the first was completely unselected, the 2nd two were after selecting for a slightly thicker phenotype:

For casing- I just used standard 1:1 peat/vermiculite pH'd to 7.3
For me bisporus was slow... but strong by bioassay.

the grow log is here:
