Splitting caps....tried searching, but still unsure.
    #2887429 - 07/13/04 10:00 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Caps on my friends bulk grow are splitting. Ive searched previous threads and read that it could be low/high humitidy, or low/high moisture content in the substrate. The substrate is a mix of 30/70 poo/straw. There are droplets on the sides of the walls so he doesnt feel its a humitidy problem. What could be causing his caps to split all over?

Thanks!

Ever flatten an orange peal? Ever seen an unfolded globe? Solid round objects must split in order to become flat.

The cooler question would be: How come some caps don't split?

My friend's last bulk grow had some monster shrooms, and no splitting caps....this bulk grow has smaller sized shrooms, and the caps are splitting everwhere. The stems are a bit thicker also, but the height of the shrooms is nothing to be proud of. What could be the problem?

I've read that it is due to rapid fluctuation in humidity.

Fungi do not have a cuticle like plants do. This means that they can lose water extremely readily through their cell wall, and hence need a high humidity to grow/thrive in an above ground atmosphere where the moisture content is (typically) much less than its substrate.

The idea is: When the humidity drops rapidly, water is lost through the chitin cell wall. This dessicates the outer layer of cells in the mushroom. We've experienced how much less pliable tissue is when it has been dried.

When the mushroom proceeds to grow, one of the most active areas of growth/swelling with water is in the cap, this is because at all costs, the fungus must disperse its spores. The tissue on the interior continues to grow but the tissue that has been dessicated can't and cracks because of the tesion.

Some strains tend to split more than others even when conditions are ideal, oftentimes only on the first flush.

Here's a perfect example of some PR with splitting caps:

First Flush

Second Flush - Same Conditions
