Whole cap for inoculation?
    #1181745 - 12/31/02 12:29 PM (15 years, 3 months ago)

Can I just use a whole fresh cap for inoculating my substrate. I could see the possibility for contams but wouldnt all of those spores over power it?

I've been using Hips bulk tek and taking the colonized substrate breaking it up and distibuting it into big rubbermaid containers with hay. When that is all colonized I've been casing it with 50/50+ and I've been getting huge yeilds and flushes. I was just curious if i could bypass making syringes just to save the trouble. I was very doubtful of the idea but thought I'd ask anyway.

Do a search for cloning. It can be done, but I don't know how much trouble you will bypass using this method.

PS, I'm not sure if the cap can be used in cloning, the stem was used in most of the cases that I've read about.

Yes and no.  You didn't provide enough info in your post to answer one way or the other.  What substrate are you using?  You can take a cap and push it into a wet cow patty in the field and it will work just fine.  If you drop a cap into a bag of rye berries it might work, but I would be very surprised.  You will get growth, but you will also probably get contamination.

You can take a small culture from under the cap where the stem connects (a nice sterile area) and clone it on agar and then transfer an agar wedge to grain, and then transfer the grain to straw (waiting for growth between each transfer), etc...

If you want a good answer without flames, you need to provide us with a better picture of what you want to do.
