What are these split caps?
    #661973 - 06/04/02 05:53 AM (23 years, 16 days ago)

I used birdseed cakes to colonize horse dung. Puerto Rican strain from sporworks i believe. The shrooms are monster. some are close to a foot long! But the caps are split. Right up from the edge to the center top of the cap there are a few splits, sometimes as many as 6 or 7. It makes them look like the pedals on flowers. Is it just because they've gotten so big? It's PLENTY humid in the terrarium so i don't think it is because they are dry. maybe too much moisture? The base of the stems are really fuzzy too. Usually, with just plain rice cakes, teh base of the stems are a bit fuzzy, but in the case of these manure grown shrooms, it's fuzzy about half way and sometimes all the way up the stem. I'm also having another problem. Where as most of my shrooms normaly have nice smooth, uniform caps, these shit shrooms have little dark recesses on teh caps. sort of like bruises.
can anyone help me out with what's been going on? I'd really appreciate the help. Thanks!

I'm just guessing but maybe they frew so fast the just split, or maybe that strain of mush do that when they mature.

this usually happens when there isn't enough moisture in your substrate. I presume thats why they split.
