Thinking about my first grow. Need some advice: Pf Tek Watertub Log * 2

So I periodically check to see if the spore sites will sell to California and they never have but I just found sites that'll ship here! I may be able to get a hobby and help my crippling depression with mushrooms I know are safe and authentic. Plus I don't have connections.

So I'm really not wanting to go the route of a customized grow just yet.

Instead I was thinking of this

It's got a micron filter for air, self healing inoculation port one layer of aged manure,peat moss,vermiculite, coconut noir,gypsum and coffee grounds and the other layer is 2lbs organic rye grain with "perfect amount of moisture"

Also I'd get 10ccs of PE. Figured it was pretty potent but I don't know much. Maybe I'd be better off with Golden teachers, B+, Jedi mind fuck, TCs, Purple mystics, Jack frost, Albino PE.


So any insight into what this kind of grow entails what I should do what strains to get I'd appreciate it.

Well as always glad I posted here first. Well it's time to learn how to grow shrooms the proper way I suppose. I just have a limited income and 70 something $ total was reasonable for set it and forget it maintenance


Are there any grow bags that aren't pre-made but just assembled that would work? Or anything similar?

Where do I start to learn simple teks that won't cost me a fortune?

I know we have learning threads here but I've never looked into them all these years and would have a bit of a tough time finding them. Especially tens that are simple and inexpensive.

Cheap, easy, almost foolproof. I still think this is the best way to start out. Use a water tub instead of an SGFC (it’s in the first post).

If you don't have a pressure cooker, you can do PF tek. It's more foolproof for newbies than using grain and you can get decent results from it. Just be aware that you have to slide out the cakes once they're ready, so you need to use wide mouth cylindrical jars. Supplies should be easily available in many stores, you just need to get a spore or LC syringe.

Start by reading the first cultivation stickie here in the cultivation subforum.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Shroomery

PFtek is great for beginners that don't want to invest in any of the gear needed for mass production via agar/grains and can be steam sterilized in a standard pot with a lid.  Get 1-2 dozen half pt wide mouth jars, A bag of BRF (other whole grain flour can be substituted), 2x the flour volume in vermiculite, 1 MS/LC syringe per dozen to inoculate them and then fruit them in a water tub.  If you can snag a brick of coir, rolling the cakes in it makes for much better surface conditions when fruiting.

Awesome guys Pf tek it is! I'll do some research tonight on it. I'll be reading that guide like a Bible. Being here on the shroomery for so long I kind of thought it'd be pf tek but I just never took note.



Now the next question is strains. Should I try different strains in one grow? Also which should I start with. I was thinking Golden teachers, TCs, Maybe a straight up B+,jedi mind fucks etc.

I want something that will be easy to grow first time so I could see the process and learn from it so I'd fare better with harder strains to grow. As long as I grew it correctly and it has psilocybin in it I'll be very happy with it.

Also I live in a place that's extremely hot during summer and extremely cold in winter. Should I start this project now? We've been having triple digits for weeks now. Today it's 96 which I think is pretty nice don't know if my shrooms would agree.

What are your temps inside? Or more specifically, in your growing space? I use Celsius so I may be slightly off, but in general you'd be looking at keeping the temps below 80 F.

As far as strains go, the least finicky would be standard cubes such as GT, B+ etc. or a Natalensis.

+1 for Golden Teacher. Easy to grow and a good benchmark for future grows. Go Trippin!

Sweet thank you :smile: now I just gotta figure out what to buy what quantities, when to buy them. I'll probably need to do it over several months. Gotta figure out how to spot containmented samples that's baffling.  Alot to learn

Yeah currently in the house it's 83 degrees I imagine under the bed is a little better but it's pretty hot. It's an old 1950s old folks home with a swamp cooler.

They are all cubensis. It doesn't matter which one you pick, straight up. cubes are cubes.
That being said, just pick any basic brown cube. maybe someone is having a sale on syringes or mss. None is easier or harder to grow than the other.

also the term "strains" is less correct in this application than the word "varieties" which reflects the differences between the two terms. Strain is problematic because mycologists use it word to describe a single dikaryotic filament capable of producing fruiting bodies. Two germinated monokaryons have to undergo plasmogamy in order for this to occur.

Well I'll certainly have to work on that. The depression kills alot of the motivation but I'm doing this for my depression.

What I gotta do is not think of the entire cost of the project and all I'll have to learn right now just step by step.

yep. take it easy, don't go crazy. This hobby not only required patience and determination. It demands it. There is a reason growers are somewhat of a rarity. Most people give up long before they achieve a modicum of success with it.

I wouldn’t buy that crap. Get 4oz jars and make a water tub. You don’t need a pc for brf cakes either.

$45 and the only usefull parts are the jars, BRF and verm - the rest is a complete waste of money.  I already gave you a list of everything you need to make many more PFtek cakes for less money.
