Gave this young one a new home today. Any tips on root development or general care taking are welcomed and appreciated. Never jad an experience with MDA so I'm looking forward to the end result of this process. Hoping to go back for some more little guys soon for gifting or trading.

Its a very long way between a young sassafras plant and MDA.
The sassafras needs to be several years old before any roots can be harvested and you need to be good at organic chemistry to convert the safrole to MDA.
And you need chemicals that are on the watched list and those one cant buy at the hardware store.
Im not trying to say its impossible but its quite a hard project to do.
But some determined people get to be astronauts and go to space so becoming a decent chemist is far easier if one look at it that way.

I had similar ideas long ago but the more i researched about it, the more i came to realise how difficult it actually is to do.
Did i mention that its against the law to make these things?

However, if you want a smaller quantity of safrole i would go out dig up some sassafras roots from an older sassafras albidum tree if you are lucky to have them growing where you live.
If not, i would get some piper Auritum plants instead of sassafras albidum.
The P.Autritum grows very fast and dry leaf has 2-3% oil that is mostly safrole.
Steam destillation of the leaf material would get you the essential oil that then needs to be fractionally destilled to yield the pure safrole.

Nothing is impossible if one tries hard enough.

You barely get a drop out of a ton of root bark that's why they make it synthetically. It's not worth it.

You get a lot more than a drop. Dried root bark can
be 10% oil. And that oil can consist of 90% safrole.
You could also wait until a locust swarm and collect
the dead ones to harvest guiacol from their gut and
start there. Or get a ton of hornet spray and extract
out the piperonyl butoxide and start there. There are
a ton of ways to do it. All of which can kill you or
others. Never attempt.

But... Growing such a beautiful tree is fucking awesome.

Most of the safrole supplying the illegal market comes from SE Asia.
There is a huge problem in Cambodia where the wild Cinnamon Camphora trees is getting illegaly cut down and the roots boiled for the oil.
The large Cinnamon Camphora trees is getting very rare and they probably dont stop until they all are gone.

The FDA have put Safrole on the possible cancerogenic list.
Thats why rootbeer dont get flawored with Sassafras Albidum oil anymore.
One might could suspect that outlawing safrole would have something to do with that it is a precursor for MDA and MDMA.
But who knows, maybe you can get cancer if you consume some safrole.
Rootbeer has been flawored with sassafras for very many years in the past so any cancer risk must be quite small i think.
But FDA says Safrole is a possible cancer giving compound so i would skip the sassafras tee just to be sure.

The amount of oil varies from one distillation to the next. Sometimes it’s a nice blob, other times it’s so minuscule it doesn’t even seem worth the time to work up. Let’s be clear, I do not cook mda, I am merely an aromatic enthusiast. I no longer do these distillations. I have read a good bit on synthesis though and most of the methods out there were written when one could buy a decent amount of oil legally. You’re best approach is building these compounds synthetically. Buy a good book and start there. But please kill the dream of growing enough oil for such a process. If you bought some land that you wanted to clear and the trees were mature sassafras then that’s a diff story. A great deal of commercial bark has already been steam distilled. Whether it was done legally as prevention or illegally, it’s conc is rel  low. The bigger the chunks the better. The tree is quite beautiful though and is always a nice addition to any garden. Just don’t go too heavy w watering 👍🏻

Does anyone have knowledge of growing Sassafras Albidum?

I planted a small cutting/seedling/plant in the garden and put it in a real shady place with claylike soil.
Now i see other things grow tall beside the small plant/tree and it wont get much sunlight soon.
I think i must move it to a better location thats why i wonder what soil they like and also how much sun they like.
Can it take full sunlight?

The plant/tree is just 30-40cm tall and i ordered it from a nursery in Germany.
And it will take forever until its big.
No roots going to be harvested from this baby.

Mine is in full sun. A little shade would likely do it right. Be kind of meager w the water. They don’t like to ga e wet feet. Watch out for silk worms and caterpillars! They always get me. Pretty easy plant all around, but my climate is a tad moist. They grow native upstate though

tnx my friend.

I put it in a location where it gets some morning sun and little shade rest of the day.
I suspect it is going to be popular with snails and bugs as it has this nice aroma.
Snails already eaten a bit of it.

thank you. i saw a vid on IG last week about sassafras, the guy must've read that article.

i totally forgot about it until i ran into a few of them early this week, next thing you know i got roots in my dehydrator.
