sassafras trees identification

I'm told this is a local tree( I'm in WN?Y by lake erie), would there be anyone her able to help me ID this tree. I've been searching on google but if there is someone that could offer personal help and or tips on finding them that would be great. I would never have imagined such a great thing could be in my back yard. I'm very excited about this I do hope its true. Anyone in the WNY area that can confirm that these are around... I keep looking at pics of the leaves and they look like some I've seen in my yard..........

Do the leaves look like this? This shows the three different shapes that they commonly come in.

Also, look around the tree for offshoots from the main root stem, older trees usually have a few of them around. Pull up some of the root, and smell it. Sassafras has the strong smell of rootbeer.  They are very easy to identify, with no other tree so closely resembling it.

I've got a 40 footer in my backyard, along with 3 10 footers around it.

I would gladly take cuttings if you can't find any in your area.

Yeah, you could have sassafras.  The smell and the leaves (even though they're all different, they have the same rounded ends) are the best way to ID.  Also it has yellow core wood.  So you could cut it down and find out that way (kidding, but the twigs should appear orange to yellow also).  It's one of my favorite little trees, for the scent, although the chemical that produces this scent (safrole) is a carcinogen.  Although, to humans at any sort of reasonable dosage, I imagine the risk is quite small.

I've also read that there exists a method for converting safrole into MDMA.  I highly doubt that this is easy or feasible for most people, especially if you tried to extract it from the tree itself.

I've heard the same thing, but I'm no methlab chemist.

It goes something along the lines of

1) obtain safrole, the essential oil.
2) isomerize safrole into iso-safrole (Using Potassium Hydroxide as catalyst and doing the reflux under vacuum with no solvent)
3) convert into MDP2P (don't remember details of this step)
4) Reductive animation into MDMA with methylamine

All in all, it's retarded, highly illegal, dangerous, and involved.

And iso-safrole is almost not carcinogenic, that's just the method they used to make it illegal and controlled.

I was just asking if there were people hat would be able to ID a tree once I get some pics..... I dunno what you're talking about.....

Sorry didn't mean to jack your thread, I was replying to horticulture.

personally, I love the way my tree looks, and the way it smells.
You can take fresh stem growth and chew on it, and it tastes pretty good.

You can also take older limbs, remove twigs (which are sometimes hollow) and pack them with any flavorful herb or tobacco and use them as cigarettes. The wood chars and releases a pleasing taste, and when you pack the tobacco/herbs down into it you can get it to burn for quite some time.

If you have some pics,Get em on here. We can ID them for you no Prob. There are only a couple tree's that resemble Sassy's leaf patterns and that one doesn't smell like sassy when you snap a twig.

Just in case yall didn't know.

The dried and ground leaves are used to make filé powder, a spice used in the making of some types of gumbo.

Therefor OOOOEEE GUMBO :smile:

That picture of the leaves should help you quite a bit identifying sassy.  All on one tree you should expect to see three different leaf shapes.  That along with the smell will really confirm your finding.  I cut down a bunch of saplings here in the PNW from someone's yard and it smelled wonderful.

There are some at the nursery I sued to work at...
But I remember placing pesticides that killed the bugs that ate the plants into some of the containers, and Im not sure if I put it in the sassy trees....

I'm not willing to put years towards any project.....me looking a week ahead is a lot these days...... I do appreciate the offer but wouldn't have a trade anyway /me = broke...... hence dreaming of local trees.
