Smellyhobbit I recently ran into a post about dehydrating and, I think it was you that mentioned you can just leave the big mushrooms, even if the trays don't push down completely because they'll eventually go down as it dehydrates. Trying this now with PE and excited to preserve the full fruit look on some of my big bois

May somebody help me to identify if the agar is fine or contaminated. The black spot in the middle are just spores. I am not sure about the white.

Looks ok but not safe for grains yet. Grab a small section from the nicest area, and put it on a new plate. Repeat at least one more time.

I've been having great success with using Gnocchi Water (very starchy potato boil water) for my agar. I just mix the undiluted leftover water from boiling them, combine with agar and then PC it in an instant pot. Best growth I've had, always ropey.






Does anyone else use other foodgrade starch water for agar? I wonder if pasta water would be enough. Rice shouldn't have any leftover but I am pretty sure that would work.

It means that it is hard to say if that mycelium is just cube mycelium, or if there could be bacteria or molds in it.

The beauty of agar is that it lets us keep taking only the best growth, until we know we have something that is genetically uniform and free of any other possible contaminants. Maybe your plate is 70% safe right now, but by next transfer, it's probably closer to 90%, does that make sense?

Anyhow, please do yourself a favor and wait for a clean culture until you go to grains.

So picked a bunch.

Do o just stick them into the dehydrator as is? Do I wash off the dirt(coir) lumps.

You can try just rubbing the coir off. I only wash mine if they were in a tub that had any mold. Try to get off most of the coir you can, but dont go crazy, technically its easier after its dried.

I started splitting my biggest shrooms in half, that way it takes less time to finish getting them cracker dry. To each their own, but any loss of potency would be negligible.

Is it normal for Golden Teachers to open their caps and drop spores when they are less than two inches tall?

And when dehydrating in a dehydrator, you dehydrate the caps too even if they opened? Will that not spread spores everywhere?

^ there is always variety and different phenotypes, especially if it was from multispore.  If they aren't growing much, it could just be not ideal conditions or they are competing against bacteria.

Yes dehydrate everything, never had issues with spores when drying. Maybe split them in half if any are really dense.

This is my first time and I'm doing PF tek. They seem fine, they grow pretty fast IMO but I have no reference so I don't know. They just open their caps before they before they become big.

It took longer than I expected to get here, still less than two months though.

I picked a few that just barely started breaking the veil too.

Yeah once the cap is open its time to pick it up. You can see that its sporing, look at the black on the stem. Avoiding that mess makes for a nicer looking outcome, that tastes less bad. Sporesplosions sucks.

I just finished a spore print form the first mushroom I picked and now 24 hours later when I removed the cap from the foil it had a few water drops on the foil under the cap.

Could that be a sign that it might be too humid in the fruiting chambers?

Apologies if this is the wrong thread, but I couldn't find a relevant one for gourmets, and it is a question. So I have some plates of Enoki from spore prints foraged this past February and put to agar earlier this month. I was looking at it today and saw this

Garbage pictures, but can Enoki even pin and fruit on agar like this? Or am I growing something else entirely. Here's the wild specimen the print came from

Yeah I just picked that one. Taking a spore print from it.

The hygrometers I put in the fruiting chambers show 99%. Is that too high? Can that make them open their caps too fast?
