I always start with twist and pull but if they seem to be pulling up too much sun for my liking I switch to curved pruning scissors.

This is my first grow. How do I harvest, do I use a sharp knife, scissors, twist and pull or bite them off?

Yes to all these options.

Many use medical scissors, I typically just twist and pull.

I used a thingie I got from Midwest, that measures contaminants in the air, and it took about 3-4 min for the contams to get down to zero.

Hope this helps

Thanks, I knew I saw something about a "germ" counter!

I got a bacterial BPE print that I've tried to germinate unsuccessfully several times now. Agar transfers just moved the contamination along with the mycelium. Took some myc off a BRF puck to agar, that was also covered in bacteria. I had given up on it, but I made a new germ plate that went bacterial the next day. 5 days later there was some mycelium that grew in a part of the plate that looked clean. I did a transfer to water agar and it's growing quickly, but I can see what appear to be tiny droplets enmeshed in the mycelium. Is this the bacterial growth, or maybe just trapped moisture? There's no color, all the previous plates turned milky within 24-48 hrs of streaking, and this plate is about 5 days in. The droplets are also only visible if hit by light at the proper angle, otherwise they're difficult to distinguish from the mycelium.

Hey folks, I finally got back to growing after a 6 year hiatus, which pretty much means I got newbie eyes again. Here are pics of the growth from 2 different jars, each inoculated a week ago with one agar wedge each. To me they both look fine, but I would like a second set of eyes. No white mold or something? Thanks!

Jar #1:

Jar #2 (not a perfect pic I know):

UPDATE: The thinner stuff was definitely mold as I opened up one of the jars and checked. It obviously didn't smell like mushroom at all, and also didn't hold together the grains like mycelium does.
The thick and whiter stuff was geniune mycelium and smelled like fresh mushrooms. In conclusion, the agar plate was contaminated. Fuck. Just made some new transfers though that look better already

Im going to try to make my own agar over using some premade dishes or giving myself another brand mark trying to pour the stuff.

I was thinking of using some 4 ounce jars for it just for the ease of pressure cooking and done.

The question I have is, instead of holes/tape like you would for pf tek, can I just turn the lid upside down on these? I found that I sort of dislike destroying the jars, they are so handy for other things and well (although I have a drill now), hammering like 30 holes like the first time I did this is very annoying.

That's fine.

My plates are slime mold containers and they have no gas exchange.

I have a couple of cultures that will even pin in them.

Thanks for the reply.

The transfers were made from a plate looking VERY similar to one from another thread by another user:

The growth was nicely uniform when making the transfers, but it was very tomentose compared to some of the beautiful rhizo agar photos on this site. Could it be that it is slowly converting to thicker rhizo myc? It seems like on jar #1 for instance that the edges are for sure getting thicker and more defined.

If it started clear and turned cloudy, there is probably bacterial contamination.

If it looked cloudy to start with and the only change is the stuff floating on top, then I still think it looks sketchy.

Hi Lyle. I’m pretty new and what I see could be all wet (pun intended). What I’m realizing is that mycelium is a master at managing water. Those clear spheres of water are managed by the mycelium. I’m going to guess the mycelium had to move water around as there is quite a bit on the plate. Looks great to me given the conditions. And, I wouldn’t hesitate to transfer a few plates from that rhizo growth

It gets more pronounced when you go to substrate. The beautiful water drops look carefully separated by the mycelium and they can get quite large. Hopefully, one of our masters knows — I’m just guessing

At worst case, you’ll know for sure real soon.

Using Ziplocs (Ziplocks) as Fruiting Chambers

I think that’s what you’re looking for. Or do you mean bags for cooking grain?
