That's mold. Stop using micropore tape to wrap plates. Use parafilm or clingwrap.

Lots of people use BTI, and DE (which must be dry to work) but the problem is, for it to work, they have to come walk all over your shit, have a party, unprotected sex and lay eggs, not exactly what I'm looking for.

I prefer to not worry about killing them but keeping them away from my stuff. Peppermint oil. Add a drop to steeping grains, now they aren't interested in the jars or bags, add a drop to the coir hydration and you won't see any after spawning. Otherwise you can put a drop in any sprayer to lightly mist an entire area for months of repelling. Perfectly fine to spray subs and fruits. Works on outdoor grows too. Keeps all pests at bay including slugs, mice, voles, rats and so far coons.

:whathesaid:
Just want to say thanks for this tip @LadysKnight and I would encourage others to go this route if looking for a quick and easy way to ward off fungus gnats. I combined 12 drops of peppermint oil with 1/4 tsp of liquid dish soap in a cheap, little 1oz spray bottle and topped it off with tap water. A couple of sprays in the infested tub and a few more around all of my tubs did the trick. I haven't seen any gnats in over 24 hours now. I also went a step further and created a trap by putting a bit of apple cider vinegar in a bar glass, covering it with cling wrap, and poking a few holes in it so gnats can get in but not easily out.

Ok, my last batch, my mazatapec wore little white hats on their head and I learned from you all that it’s normal. This time, their hats are more like sombreros.  Does this look ok or is it contaminated? TIA

Don’t think I’m gonna trust this one. After a shake you can see where the myc was rebounding but then there’s this light fuzzy growth that has taken over the rest of the grain. RIP

Bad picture, I know, but got rid of it already. Which green mold is this if anyone can tell?

Sorry Herme5, dunno what you have.

I have also some kind contamination, which I never had yet before. Does anyone know what this is? It is 2 days old and is like a star system on the plate. If desired mycelium grows at this speed, I want it!

And these are all the plates (the other plates look fine):

I must start with that I am a complete beginner and this is my first grow and first time doing agar, lme + honey (next time will change this out for glucose syrup). I have 4 strains growing on agar, all inoculated to agar on 23/05, pictures taken 29/05, all spores were from spore prints and everything was done in SAB (I streaked the plates with an inoculation loop, flame sterilizing after every streaked side, then were placed into a Ziploc bag 4 of each in one bag and stored in a dry dark closet, temp was probably around 25°C to 28°C is that too high?[Can't change that, we have a heat wave 😅]). Growth has been pretty much the same for all of them, first 3 days there was nothing, then small yellow dots appeared (like the ones on B+ #2 12-3 o'clock), now all that white is growing from these dots( I think the colour was from my food coloring?). My question is do these look contaminated or not? When should I take transfers? I think #1 B+ is contaminated because of the yellow slime and there is a lot of white fluff, can I save it? Transkeis look a little bit weird to me but maybe it's the strain that forces growth like that?
I will write about other 2 strains soon.

Here are my 2 other strains I started, Jedi Mind Fuck(JMF) and Golden Mammoth(GM), both #1 look suspicious to me, JMF just looks like yellow slime and the streaking pattern(will grow it out to see what happens) and GM has this weird white fluff again that seems to be on B+ #1 as well. Do these look contaminated? When should I take a transfer?

Hey fam. Asked this in the quick questions thread but didn't get any responses. I had a shoebox that presented a small flush (my first grow). After dunking and putting back into fruiting, it developed a milky white powdery frost on everything.

I ended up dumping the tub as the spawn was originally slightly bacterial sonassumed it was due to that. However I am still curious if the powdery appearance is typical after a dunk or if my suspicion of contam were appropriate.

Thanks! Trying to learn the nuance.

As long as it’s white and not green I’d keep it around for a couple more flushes.

Hello everyone!

While this is my first post ever on the Shroomery boards, I have been a (lurking) member since Sept 2022, and I have at least 5 grows under my belt...all thanks to the wonderful information available here!

On 5/10/2024 I spawned 4 jars of Jedi Mind Fuck (JMF) grain spawn to my bulk substrate which consists of a mixture of coco coir and rehydrated horse manure (hpoo). I believe I may  have gotten the coir over field capacity but not by too much.

For reference, I'm using MaxYield Bins, and I currently have the "colonizer" lid on the bin (its flat instead of a dome). I'm waiting for the mycelium to show up before putting the dome lid. I have micropore tape on the side holes of the bin.

Today I checked it, and I'm attaching a pic of what I saw.

For the life of me, I can't tell if this is contamination or if it just the start of the mycelium visible growth on the top layer.

Is there anyone here who can shed some light on this for me? Thanks in advance and I truly appreciate any observations anyone might have on this.
