vermiculite jars stopped growing.
    #2869064 - 07/08/04 02:28 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

my vermiculite and brown rice flour jars have stopped colonizing. Im convinced its because of a lack of water. But i was wondering If i could transfer a chunk of mycelium from these jars to a new jar? the mycelium has been inactive for about a week now, so im wondering if it will grow at all even in a new jar? And another question, if i filled a syringe with steryle water and injected it into the jars would the mycelium start growing again?

I would try reading some of the Mycelia culturing teks on this web site. Also you could try pressure cooking a half pint jar thats about 3/4 full of water sterilizing the water inside. make sure you poke a hole in the lid of the jar. IN a very clean enviroment transfer a spoon full of mycelia into the sterile water and shake it vigorously. Some people put marbles or something in the jar before cooking to help break up the mycelia. Anyways with a sterile neeedle draw out your mycelia filled soultion and start with new jars. There are more detailed instructions on this tek on this web site.

afoaf cased cakes that weren't fully colonized (about 90%) w/ no problems so far.

Have you turned them upside down?

Gets the CO2 out.

Might work.

Good Luck.

i would think that 2 weeks would be ample time for the mycelium to recolonize the uncolonized substrate in the casing. you may have had outside contam sources...does this sound correct to any of the pros out there?

DOn't mean to discourage you, but you should do some more reading. What r your temps @? Where did you get your syringe and of what? I've done lots of successful transfers with brf cakes even at 40%. How did u PC them and 4 how long? Your giving very little info. what % of your BRF cakes r coll? More info brother...

I had the same problem with my cakes, they just stopped. But they had a really bad smell when I loosened the lid. You should check for any smells, like a fermenting sour smell. Basically, if it's not earthy or mushroomy, it's contams. I had to chuck 8 of my jars and I never used the BRF Tek again....WBS all the way.
Good luck
