MYCO BAG FRUITING
    #2861864 -

MY BAGS ARE ALMOST 100% COLONIZED!only the bottom has some uncololnized parts and it is moving very slow across the bottom.should i break up again Or just wait FOR THE REST OF THE bottom TO COLONIZE.also should i cut 1' slits above mycellium to pin faster when fully colonized .i have come this far i do not want to screw anything up.thanx jim

just wait it out
and yes cut slits when it is 100% colonized

Don't break them up now because you've almost got it fully colonized, but if you do this again, make sure to break it up when you get a decent size area of mycelium. This should drastically speed up colonization.

Hmm, this is the first I've heard of cutting the slits in mycobags.. can anyone explain the reason behind it, and does it increase the chances of contams? Thanks for any info.

If the bag is 100% colonized it shouldn't increase the rate of contamination (unless the bag is being stored in a VERY dirty area). The slits can be cut, I'm assuming, to aid in providing fresh air to the substrate to stimulate pinning and for better fruit formation. This is akin to taking the entire substrate block from the bag and placing it in a larger terrarium.

We sometime suggest a similar idea, but we recommend cutting the bag at the very top and fanning in fresh air daily and then reclosing with a small clip or "chip saver" type device after fanning. This fresh air introduction can cut down the time it takes to pin and promote more healthy mushroom formation and growth. It also gives you the opporutnity to mist the interior of the bag with spring or distilled water if it starts to appear "dry" for some reason.

exactly as I've done it... I also fill the bag just above the substrate and soak it overnight in the fridge to rehydrate after a flush or 2... drainging it is as simple as inverting the bag for an hour and giving it a little support

Thanks for the responses. Bags are so new to me, I'd never even realized it was that possible or easy until about a week ago. I haven't seen any teks for bags anywhere (it sounds easy enough that writing a guide would just be absurd). If you guys have any other helpful info on growing in bags, please feel free to share. I want to soak up as much knowledge before I try it myself.

A simple question about bag growing -- how do you seal the pre-sealable bags? I mean what's different about them that allows them to be presealable? Do you not need an impulse sealer?

The presealable bags have a different filter patch design which allows gasses to vent faster during cooking so there isn't a sudden buildup that can result in explosion inside the cooker. To seal before cooking you just try to remove as much air as possible from the bag and then run the impulse sealer on the point you wish to seal (usually near the top of the bag).

You don't "need" an impulse sealer but it sure does make the job a whole lot easier. You can get by for a time with one of those small hand-held "euro-sealer" things sold at Target and K-marts.
