growing from a print
    #2861001 - 07/06/04 10:54 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

alright.. I've read alot of Tek's, but everyone I've read uses a syringe to place the spores in the jars... I don't have a syrings, nor do I know of anywhere to get one ( i live in the middle of friggin nowhere).. oh yeah, I'm a newb, too.. if you can't tell already... and this is gonna be my first grow. what's a good way of growing from a print? I'm going to have my grow outside, I know of alot of good places in the woods to grow (high humidy, shade, etc.)

thanks

you can open up your jars and scrape spores in using a knife thats been sterilized with rubbing alcohol...just make sure before hand you spray the shit outta the area your working with with lysol(but make sure to let it settle before opening the jar) also I recommend dumping some alcohol in your hands and rubbin it all around and up your arms...and wear a dry wall mask...if you do all that and your in a relatively small room with no air moving around you should be golden I have done this before with success

oh and don't put too many spores into each jar....if you can see a spec in the jar you have plenty

try going to the shroomery sponsors page, they have empty syringes and ones with the spores ,IMO buying the prefilled and sterilized syringes would be your best bet. the reason people use syringes is to hydrate the spores before you put them in the substrate, i am new but i guess you could put the dry ones in, it would take much longer to hydrate the spores and then to myc growth.you would probably have a better success rate with the syringes. before you start a grow outdoors you are going to have to have some kind of substrate (ie: pf cakes, spawn jars or bags)
that is just my opinion maybe someone else has a different idea

it didn't take any longer for mine to germinate from a dry print...I think the rehydration of spores thing is mostly a myth to be honest.. I use syringes right after making them and the jars germ the same as syringes that I let sit overnight first

sounds good! Sounds much easier than flaming the needle and cleaning it with iso. Just sterilize knife and throw em in. my foaf should experiment with that sometime.

you don't have to flame the needle either..all you need to do is wipe it down with some alcohol same as the knife

what about the dead spores that could be inside the needle or bacteria that maybe got inside. i can understand the knife but wouldn't it be kind of better to flame the needle just as a precaution?

I have never once flame sterilized and I've never had a problem...if your worried about whats in the needle just squirt a few drops out before innoculating(I usually do this anyways) you DON'T need a flame

How about what's outside on the needle surface?

in pa you cant get a syringe because of laws but if you go to a staple or office max you can buy an ink refill kit for your printer. $11.00 for just black i think but inside is a plunger with a round tip needle. works just fine.

the good thing about the syringe is that you can innoculate at multiple injection sites and the spore solution can travel down the sides of the jars, covering more surface area of substrate and therefore colonizing TONS faster...do yourself a favor and get a syringe. visit the sponsor's forum.

well, due to living situation constrictions, I can't risk ordering a suspicious looking package in the mail with a syringe in it... I live with my dad (went broke, had no place to go, so he lent a helpful hand and is letting me stay with him for a bit... I work my own weight here, and I got privacy, and can come an go as I please.. but now if I had a package come in the mail, he'll know.. and prolly ask what's in it... I'm not gonna lie to him (code of honor thing).. and I'd rather just avoid the conflict.

now, back on the print.. I suppose one print could go a LOOOONG way, eh? what about cutting a portion of the print into tiny tiny tiny bits with a sterilized razor blade, then pushing those bits down into my jars? could that work?

spores need to be properly hydrated before they can germinate and i'm not positive if your substrate will do that job properly...although it probably will. i think you will just end up waiting a LOOOONG time for the whole cake to colonize the way you are trying to do it. a couple scrapes of the print may be all you need for 1 jar so i do believe your print could go a long way.

good luck

damn.. well.. i need a fairly fast way to grow.. since i'm growing outdoors, I have a limited season to grow in.. I proly got til late september/early october before temps start dropping too low

i do have an extremely gettofied way of getting the spores hydrated and into the jars.. i could use drink straws and a thin metal rod (sterilized, of course) to make a passage into the side of the jars, in which I carefully pour a tiny amount of water with spores in it... then remove the straws, which would then cause my mixute in the jars to collapse back in on itself, leaving the spores in it.. I know I'm exposing risk to contams.. but it might work..

all this is isn't serious.. just speculation if I can't get ahold of some sort of syringe.. i assume I can easily transfer my spores from print to syringe (right?). I still got a few days before my prints arrive in the mail.

oh yeah, just so yah know, I'm gonna be using pasterized horse manure, dirt, and ay as my main compost for my shroomies when I grow outside.. I got a bunch of spots scouted and planned.. my plan is to mix my cakes with this stuff and hopefull get a bunch of good multiple yields in two or three months

well, you may end up being very dissappointed or very happy. this seems to be an experiment and that's okay because all of these teks were once experiments so good luck to you.

yep, many teks on making syringes from prints...and it's very easy to do.

when I get em from fsrc I just take the tinfoil out, open it, and scrape the spores back into the baggie, then add some distilled water and rehydrATE for 24 hours. then suck the solution into your syringe and your ready to go. syringes can be gotten at shoppers drug mart or probly any other drug store for like 98 cents each, It sucks though cuz people always look at you weird like your a junkie, lol.
btw I am almost totally unsterile when innoculating I dont do it under a fan hood and I dont sterilize. I have like a 3% contam rate for jars and 0% for casings. my house is messy also.
personally I think ppl go to far and are way to paranoid about contams. you got to remember were talking about a fungus thats natural habitat is fucking unsterilized cow shit and straw in a filthy cow feild. do It if you think its necessary, but I dont see how you guys even afford that much lysol, alchohaul, h2o2 etc. btw I like your kodama icon . mononoke hime rules!
( i dint see the part about not being able to get syringes., Id say just scrape em into the jar or at last resort use a turkey baster?? this would be hard to control how many cc's each jar gets tho.
my 2 cents
