I recommend the book Turning the Mind Into an Ally.  IMHO, it's the best damn  book  on the subject.

1. Practice regularly.

2. Don't make it complicated. (Any meditation guidebook could be condensed to one page - hard to sell one page though.)

3. Forget all about mystical states, the third eye, blue lights, etc. Have no expectations whatsoever.

^^ what he said

simply focus on your breathing, taking it nice and slow and steady and deep.. relax your body and just be. inhale, exhale, pause. let your inhale take air into the bottom of your lungs..pulling from your stomach not the chest. focus on your breathing, and let unwanted thoughts that enter your mind just float by like a cloud in the sky.. pay no attention to them.. just breath and be the silent observer. like swami said, no expectations..

actually swami's points on this are accurate to a degree,
however, the self is a fairly complicated community of attitudes and impulses so reading and studying and applying one's self often means discovering many routes to the same portal- it also gives you a chance to immerse in your quest.

don't let your curiosity be daunted. it is like faith but much more powerful.

there might be 10,000 ways to say the same thing - and some will mean more to you. Much of it is in discovering that someone walked this path before is encouraging (though each path is very unique).

Some yoga first is useful since while learning meditating it is good not to be very involved with reacting to impulses from the body.

Once posture is settled, establish breathing as a regular process.
Then some point of concentration will be applied. The tip of the nose is an excellent - no bullshit- position at which to apply concntration.

keeping the concentration going often involves a mantra, but vipassana style meditation engages a simpler connection:

Quote:

as the in-breath is followed mentally track it "begginning... middle... end..."
and then as the out-breath is followed "beginning... middle... end..." .

to help cultivate bare attention, if you have a long breath, merely take note "it is a long breath" and resume.

keep this up for 20 minutes at the start will be excellent.
duration can be increased to 45 minutes without a break.

most important is some regularity. keeping it simple and no expectation.
