Scalloping
    #28463032 -

I know there is some contention surrounding scalloping.

Here is an example of scalloping clearly being caused by a secondary culture. Whether the secondary culture is mycelium or mold I am not sure and perhaps scalloping may be caused by eithe. Anything that the mycelium will form an exclusion around / separation zone to.

The only folks who've claimed that scalloped edges are perfectly normal/healthy growth, are people I'd probably refer to as noobs.

I've never encountered a scalloped plate that colonized grain without issue, or fruited properly.

Yeah when it happens spontaneously on a non contaminated, non-germination petridish then I’m guessing that means that there is something entwined that is separating out when the scalloping occurs. Perhaps that could be incompatible mycelium cultures or entwined mold. A bit of a wilder idea is perhaps a hyphae can lose a nucleus for some reason when under stress and create an incompatible secondary monokaryotic culture.

In either case it would be a sign of something not desirable.

I’ll try to take a sample of the secondary culture in the picture above using a needle and see if I can figure out what it is.

Out of curiosity, how many times have you seen scalloped mycelium go to grain/fruiting?

I've intentionally tracked scalloped cultures from vegetative through to fruiting, dozens of times. I've never been "successful". My last attempt scalloped heavily, ran slowly on grains, about 2 months to fully colonize, then another 1.5 months to produce meager pins via top fruited jars.

The growth was very stressed with weak over all colonization of the coir topping.

Which in turn produced this:

The same plate with back lighting reveals inhibitory zones with dark zones. The dark areas are so dense they're preventing light penetration:
