I think a lot of the problem may have started with the fact that I used the phrase 'most of you' in this post and that's easy to take personally

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/28367081#28367081

If it don't apply let it fly. I use the phrase most of you cynically anticipating the trajectory of the thread based on the last few replies but I shouldn't have used it because as yet it wasn't the case that most people in the thread where the kind of people I'm addressing

At the strip mall, downtown, there are many police reports. I don't really think to use the big box stores, except I don't like mildly senile parents going alone, if there is any way I can intervene.

During the official emergency, we were being told to wait in line, so only so many people could enter the store at once. We had to follow a specific path, so many feet apart, and were told not to buy "nonessential" (sic) items.

On the last visit, new, swinging (?) plastic gates had been installed, that would conceivably block an entrance. (I'm tallish. They were very short.) And, alot more masks were being worn, as of a week ago.

Come work at Boeing we are hiring like crazy.

Everyone is hiring like crazy. The market hasn't been this good for workers and this bad for employers in this country in a very long time. Anybody not disabled who isn't working could be. And hell I know a guy with quadriplegia with a masters in Neuroscience doing spinal cord and research so you know.... And he came from small Backcountry Texas. Doesn't come from money. Lives in a state that denies Federal Medicaid dollars but it was still smart enough to figure out that they just hired out what local Medicaid departments would do so in other states to a third party corporation that accepts Federal Medicaid money but is not explicitly a government entity. Somehow I'm not sure he ever made the connection that they're doing it at the expense of their own constituency, of which he is a part- smart enough to take advantage of systems but maybe not smart enough to understand that many of their actions and inactions remain self-defeating, but I'll digress

Many people feel that unskilled labor is beneath them. I can't say I'm not one of those people. I can say that I've done a lot of it so had that fella with quadriplegia prior to his accident.  I can say that even if I wasn't working in one of best markets for me, I could still be working in virtually unskilled labor making at least twice as much money as I could have made just a few years ago simply because of changing market dynamics

Employers are desperate for people to work and everyone sitting at home watching the news afraid that AI is going to take the jobs they don't have

Ya I'm going north right now to the hi-line to try to catch the beet harvest in North dakota or do some concrete work in montana with one of my buddies. Right now california is ridiculous and the costs of living seem to be going up every week and I don't like Cali and don't know why I even came back here. The tile gig was cool for a second but ive been ready to go since i got back. I'm a hard worker that enjoys physical labor so I tend to follow that kind of stuff. I really like seasonal migrant working jobs the most. I'll find some more work again I always do. Just annoyed more than anything cause I am getting to a place where I'd like to eventually settle down and have a home-base at least. It seems like everytime I get to a place where I start getting ahead in life some major set back happens and I'm back on the road.

You are correct though it's been easier to find work than it ever has been before these past couple years.

I vividly remember the first staff meeting we had February the 20th of 2020 stating that our hospital had its first case. The charge nurse ended her speech with "we are all going to die someday right?", to a literal uproar laughter- I'm serious. Half of the people there were laughing because they themselves thought it was a joke, and the other half of the people were laughing the way that a guy who is walking up to The gallows and just realized how he could have avoided getting caught laughs.

I'm just waxing nostalgic for cathartic reasons at this point but... to continue...

I glanced around, half-way shocked and half-way rolling my third eye as if to say "of course", and I was the only one other than the charge nurse that wasn't laughing. She was simultaneously aware of how much suffering she was about to confront, but also excited for the opportunity to have honor in death. Half crying and half laughing on the inside, doing neither out loud. I've learned to recognize this disposition quickly in others the way I recognize my own face in a mirror.

Because she's right. Everyone dies. It sucks that more people were going to die sooner than later. But if you're going to die then it's best to feel like you did it on purpose. In eastern culture they would speak of an honorable death

On the original analogy it would've been better for me to say that the latter half were laughing the way a person approaching the gallows laughs when they just realize how they could've avoided being set up for a crime they didn't do but are about to be killed for anyway

I still haven't worked out where you live dude. I am deeply sympathetic. I spent almost 3 years just kind of drifting around Arizona not feeling like I had a home even though I had places to stay at various times (but did often have to stay in my shitty corolla for a week+ at a stretch). Hope you can find a stable situation. I had a lot of support when I made the decision to go back to school. I moved back in with my parents and only had to work a part-time job in order to pay for what little community college tuition I had. My decision to study what I did was not particularly prescient, I was mostly just going off of the advice of a single guy who gave me really good vibes

I would not move to California. a younger and more naive me would have and almost did- stalled out going in cirlces around arizona. I hear a lot of nurses talk about the dream of moving to California because over there they make so much more money on average and by state law they have mandatory staffing ratios that make sense- 4:1 for med-surg floor patients, whereas I always get 6. So each one of their patients get 15 minutes of nursing attention per hour in each one of mine gets 10- and that's if you don't count me getting any breaks for water or peeing or eating. Contrary to my employer's apparent belief I cannot divide any moment of time in half in order to double the amount of time I have to do things. this isn't xeno's paradox

But these advantages are offset by the cost of living and the rising crime rate and risk from natural disasters like wildfires. Moving there would be foolish.

Bring your blue votes to Texas but try to bring some skills in the process too. The more self-sustaining we can be the less need for social programs there is

I'm freaking out here in a good way now,  I went for a little nature walk and I come back and there is this covid thread here with dozens of replies and in my brain it set off a bit of a panic/anxiety mode and then I was like "oh I posted here" mode,  I have read a lot of this and the view from the world is very interesting, it's very what I wanted to hear. So thank you for the experiences and shares. It's amazing to hear what other people went and are going through and there's a few responses I'd like to respond to when this nature trail aura wears off.

I platonically like one male nurse, who I heard sings to the patients -- whose family works for the state.

Unless you have some legally-binding reason to believe that you will be fasttracked, do not risk getting stuck here.

I spare my patients any of my singing and save it for my gf, bless her, but I hold their hands and listen to their stories when their families leave, if they ever came at all. Mostly it just boils down to the fact that I listen

One freeing aspect of my particular set of skills (which is far from limited to nursing care) is that it would be hard for me to get stuck just about anywhere other than like North Korea unless I got kidnapped by the cartel or something

After a lot of struggle I have finally come to a point in my life where I'm pretty confident that I can walk into just about any 'white collar' (paper pushing) employer and know that I have at least as much to offer them is the average other person walking in, and usually a lot more. Frustrating as my job can be though I would avoid going back into that paper pushing white-collar meaningless work environment at all costs. I'd honestly rather do straight up farming

shit, I'd still honestly rather do farming now... if certain things were different.

I have this sort of curse now where it's like hey dude you can meet somebody who's complaining of chest pain and dizziness and within a few minutes of questions know whether they need nitro, metoprolol, cardizem, potassium sparing or non-potassium sparing diuretics, or just a fucking bag of fluids really fast with a relatively high degree of certainty, before lab results are even ordered*. I know because I talk to the patients before the doctor does and I watch the order that I would have put in come through - hopefully, in most cases (but sometimes I fuck up too)

Before I was extremely confident in my ability, say during my first 2 years as a nurse, I always just sat back and waited for the doctor to do their assessment and put in their orders and then if I had any misgivings or recommendations I would provide them. These days I give the doctor until 10:30 AM to do an assessment and if they haven't showed up and then I just call them and tell them what their assessment should be and what my recommendations are and that if they would like to do something different they might want to stop by and talk to the patient themselves.

too often I have to contact the ordering doctor and cordially correct them without undermining our rapport. The hospitals are full of residents who frankly don't have as well developed of an instinct for differentiating between chest pain that needs a beta blocker and chest pain that needs a diuretic, much less which kind of each, as I do, on average, and the rest are attendings who mostly dont give a shit anymore and have eyes on retirement. It's kind of hard to just walk away from that ability/position of potentially positive influence. I will never want to be a doctor. I have much more flexibility and influence where I am now.

Actually at the hospital system that I'm usually at now the doctors try to just tell me to put in the orders for most things myself, which I actually hate. They're just being lazy and they think that they're making me feel empowered. I know how to put in the fucking specific orders correctly on this software and in two other kinds of software you probably don't know how to use at all- probably more efficiently than you do in the one you do halfway know, because you keep trying to shove it off onto any nurse who isn't headstrong to put you in your place. No I will not put in the orders. I will fill them. You do your job and I will do mine. My paycheck comes from somewhere, but it isn't that doctor, and he ain't my boss. We're colleagues. Some doctors are great by the way

The fuck else is life/trying for, idk

Probably not by me. I would need the specific examples.

Usury is a problem in the sense that every such transaction involves a gain on one end and a loss on the other. That's about all I know about borrowing and lending

I've never charged anybody interest. I did actually ask a guy to pay me back $80 recently. I was really shocked when he actually did it

Covid obviously had so many consequences, but I think besides the people who died, the kids were hurt psychologically the most by the whole experience as far as life progress and mentality changes.

I do think that we're gonna be measuring the consequences of developmental stunting for a long time.  It was never wrong to be concerned about that possibility to begin with. But it was wrong to remain hyper focused on that issue because it was personal to you in someway while ignoring the many many other issues that would not simply disappear, but be maximally detrimental if ignored. I just don't know that anyone could've come up with a better solution. The teachers were humans. This was a disease caused by a virus that killed as many humans as it could, it did not discriminate.

My girlfriend does speech language pathology and she was doing most of her sessions through zoom for a while and it was obvious that it wasn't as effective. Even when they started going in person it was obviously less effective because of the masks and the fact that kids with speech problems need to be able to see your mouth to learn most effectively how to make the sounds you're making. Let's just say those kids might have to lean a lot more on chat GPT than the rest of us (but less than long bus probably should....)
