To germ peyote you just sprinkle them on the surface and cover about a seed's thickness with sand. Cover the pot with plastic wrap and keep them moist until they sprout. They will start popping in 3 to 5 days and should finish in a month though a few might take longer. Use a fast draining soil, you can use potting soil but add a good bit of perlite and/or sand. It takes from about a year to year and a half before they are big enough to graft though I've heard of people grafting them at about 1/8" thickness which you can get in 6 months or less. Depends on how good at grafting you are. Don't give them direct sunlight, they like shade and low light levels especially at first. If they turn brown or red they are sunburned. If you just want to trip, try growing san pedro. I have a garden of pedro and while it's not fast, it is fast compared to peyote.

I find it easier to graft when they've just sprouted. You don't need bands etc (just their own sticky sap), the union heals faster, and it's a lot more economical with time. Can anyone tell me the best way to care for sunburnt seedlings? While I was away at uni my mother saw my seedlings in a shady corner of the garden, and clearly decided that all cacti needed full sun... they look healthy in every way except colour, which is really quite red... they're curently inside under weak flouro lighting.

thanks for all the information. does eveyone agree with stonehenge's method of germinating peyote seeds? it sounds correct, but i'm new to this area of cultivation and feel the more sources the better.
also, i have a few more questions hopefully some of you could help me out with.....
would a peyote crop do better inside, say by a window (out of direct sunlight of course), or would outside, shaded by some bushes, be better? i know that an ungrafted peyote button can take up to 20 years to fully mature, but what is the length of time it takes to fully mature when grafted onto a trichocereus cactus? i have heard of conflicting times from several sources. some say 1-2 years, some say 10-15 years, some say only a few months. i know it probably depeneds on a lot, but do any of you know the average time it takes when grafted to trichocereus cacti??
thanks again peace

The only thing I would add to the germing tech is to use a fungicide. I use neem oil because it's mild and won't hurt plants plus it does a good job stopping fungus.
IMO, you need to grow the crop inside if at all possible. Outdoors, you have uncertain conditions of light, temps and insects or animals. It's also harder to monitor them outdoors. When they are larger you could do that but you still have to watch them. With grafting you can get a fairly large plant in a year or less from a small plant. That doesn't mean they are mature. It will still take them a few years to be able to flower. A peyote which is grown large by grafting usually needs to grow on it's own roots for a while before it developes alkaloids. People have tried fresh buttons from a graft and not gotten effects from it. You could probably leave the graft on the host and let it mature that way.

a good approach is to grow your cacti in full power until they get big and then to starve them (to degraft big lophs perhaps and to forget about them for a good while)... i won't dare estimating how long it can take because it can vary a lot... BTW, which fungicides should i look to use for germinating seeds? i wanted to try some old ones i have... FH

I've always used Cheshunt compound when mould appears. Works well, and isn't bioaccumulative. But I don't think there are any which can't be used, so try whatever you have . Does no-one have advice about my poor little seedlings? Should I water normally etc? Please help...

If they are sunburned all you can do is give them low light levels until they recover. Some or all may die depending on how lucky you are. I would not water any more than usual unless they are shriveled. Generally, if they are sunburned and start to shrivel they do not make it anyway. That is one of the problems with having a large and varied garden. It makes it hard to go away because you can never count on anyone to take care of them the way they need to be cared for. Like I say, I use neem to control fungus and haven't had a problem with it.

It is no more, I live on the top apartment of a house, we have a back deck and my clumsy ass neighbor downstairs knocked it off the deck and broke the graft union.

Here is THE pic. Una's graft... I currently think the ages are from 3 weeks old to 3 months old (havent the patience to find out). I decided I wanna start grafting with selenicereus grandiflorus, though. Pereskiopsis blew my mind with seedlings, but selenicereus should be really great stuff too.

That, is without a doubt, the most unbelievable thing I've ever seen(at least in this life)!!! The graft I just did appears to be doing perfectly. The humidity bag was removed, and she is beautiful. She stayed perfectly still, given a slight nudge. She even seems bigger than when he was grafted, just a few days ago. I think it must be my imagination though... Or just wishful thinking... Good luck

excellent. going by una's input they can certainly grow super fast. in regards to that photo above, in case you didnt look. Una Wrote: Quote:
This peyote was grafted as a few days old seedling in June (that's only three months ago). It has already sprouted seven new pups!
3 months and there are 7 good sized peyotes. Hard to belive, but seeing how many times that person has done unbeleivable things with peyote i guess ill buy it.

it was growing real well and had just come out of winter dormancy. It grew for a month after i grafted, and ballooned to the size of a quarter from a tiny seedling. Went dormant for the winter and just started growing when it got knocked off.
