San Pedro shrivelling...
    #2805128 - 06/18/04 10:30 AM (19 years, 9 months ago)

My big sans pedro is starting to shrivel a bit, well the lobs are getting all "dried up".. well, I meen the skin is ok, but the cactus used to be all nice and fat, and now its shrivelling, the top of the cactus is ok, but the shrivelling is starting from the bottom and coming up... It's exposed to some good sun from about 7am to 4pm, but I water it every 2-3 days with decent amounts of water, but not enough to soak the whole soil.. could this be a fertilizer problem? I don't fertilise it. the other cacti are fine... what do to?

A pic would be nice.

Sunburn is usually seen as a reddish color and is seen first near the top of the cactus. When I water my pedros I make sure they are fully watered. I want to see water comming out of the bottom of the pot.

Fertilizer is also important..... if they are growing fast, I use some pretty strong fertilizer (Peters or Miracle Grow) on one watering, then the next watering I flood it with just water. Depending on how I feel.... I might then on the third watering switch to a weaker fertilizer (Dyna Grow)... Then just straight watering before starting again.

Luckily.... the water only part has been taken care of by nature so far..... rain water is good.

I also add lime sand/lime chips to the cactus mix. A few times during the summer I also add some more lime sand to keep the pH above 7.

Hope this helps.

sounds like too much heat, maybe sunlight. That's alot of watering for a san pedro too.

here's a pic, but it's not clear at all, not close enough to see the ribs just "deflating", like an old apple... I might been considering repotting it, as I noticed a lot of tiny grey bugs on the floor under a certain amouint of plant pots... Hope the roots of the pedro didn't get infected.. Oh, and would it cause alot of harm if I cut it before repotting it? I've been wanting to take some cuttings and a nice lunch  with it, or should I wait before doing one or another thing?? Idon't water it with huge amouts each time... and it's hot here (expect for today, it's rainy, but he's inside)

by the way, I don't think it's a proper sunburn, no burned skin on it, just crackeling...

yep, is from heat, I imagine. Easy on the water and try to let it get a nice breeze.

Cutting at transplant time won't hurt it but you might want to take it out of the sunlight till it heals over. They're pretty hardy.

Nice cacti, btw.
