san pedro tip turned purple and soft
    #4446763 - 07/24/05 02:40 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

Hey all, I thought maybe someone here might be able to help with my problem.

I bought (or rather traded for) two healthy san pedro cuttings probably about six months ago. I potted them right away, they rooted well, and seemed to be doing good. Overall, they've probably grown 5-6" in height.

Now, I live in Canada, and they're kept inside, so naturally they don't get too much sun (especially since the window they're by faces north). So while this has meant the new growth is much skinnier, they both still seemed to be doing fine and were a very healthy green.

I made sure not to water them to frequently, like every three weeks or so, and I had no problems with root rot or anything. However, today when I woke up, to my horror - one of my cacti's tips has turned a dark purple (about the top inch of it or so). Also, this part is softer to the touch than the rest of the cactus.

Now I had searched for purpling cacti posts, and the only one I found stated it was most likely caused by sunburn. However, this can't be the case for mine, as it barely gets adequate sun. I'm thinking it might be from overwatering, as I think someone might have started watering them by mistake (not knowing that I take care of them myself). I'll have to ask them, as they're the one who usually waters the plants in my house.

Now, will this spread? If so, should I cut that top section off, or leave it? Maybe it will heal if I leave in unwatered for a while :/. I really dunno. Any suggestions or comments would be great, and I really wish I could take a pic...

After reading some more on cactus rot and other porblems, I've determined it to be rotting. While it's a dark purple rather than black (like most cases of rot), it's soft to the touch which pretty much eliminates everything else.

So, I'm off to cut off the tip  :undecided:.  Poor little guy...

So yeah, I'll let you know how it heals.

While sure enough the rot came back. I even made sure to cut off well below the rot line, but to no avail.

I'm taking this as a sign to indulge ASAP. I had been considering it recently, and this rot scare is enough to seal the deal. Wish me luck this weekend
