Prepping half pints to recieve agar ?
    #28085492 -

Been doing a lot of reading. Researching with all the links I've gratefully been gifted to read .. I'm pretty noob here and I've knocked up some bags that are going slowly but looking healthy.

I decided I wanted something sooner so I used the last 2ccs I had left to knock up 8 plates yesterday, hoping for atleast 5 of them to pull threw for me so I can load them up into half pints and cake them

low on space rn otherwise I'd love to try to do a bulk but I'm also very inexperienced ( just have 2 healthy bags and got lucky with 10cc in 5lb bag and 6cc in 3lb bag with luckily sterile substrate  clean spores (ty shroomery fam n sponsors:tongue: ) ) - still have yet to do my first harvest, but there are things in motion - although I've read up a lot and just not sure how to go about agar innocing half pints ?

Before the PC process, should I still leave an inch or so for dry verm or should I leave that space in the jar for the agar wedge I plan on putting in there ? I know the top dry layer is to help keep out contams so maybe just leave a little hole for the agar or completely just dig out a spot for it while I'm putting the agar wedge in the jars after PC ?

And I have unmodded lids still for half pints, since I'm not innoculating with syringe should I just leave the 4 innoc holes unmodded and just make the bigger 1/4in GE hole in the middle ? Just looking for some similar experience advice or links I can look threw using this method, really its just me experimenting with the last few CC's I had trying to make them go further  2 CC's left and 6 premade plates left but I just bought some glad mini rounds so maybe I'll be pulling a pasty  ( all love, reading your pins have helped me a lot <3 ) and bod you rock for helping me make my DIY loop <3 progress report on plates in about 4 days !!

Going to be doing dropping wedges into about 10 jars in a SAB so if anyone has any insight on using agar wedges with half pints and a good method or any links that would definitely be appreciated.

I don't know if anyone actually does PF tek sorta stuff with agar in half pints, assuming that's what you mean by talking about a verm layer.  Quart jars of grain + agar = std.  Just pressure cook quart jars 2/3rds full of your favorite grain.

When you do a PF tek thing, you put the top verm layer on before pressure cooking, so there's no opening and sliding an agar slice in there.

If you've never grown mushrooms before, here's how you start.  First, follow the Updated PF Tek, put 4 holes in jar lids not 1, and use a water tub!
The next move is Shoebox Tek. After that you move onto grains, agar, monotubs.  Agar is easy, just do it.

Makes sense, probably why I didn't see many posts about innocing cakes for SGFCs with agar, but okay. Thank you for the reply

It was just experiment I wanted to do with some of the few CC's I had left, and if anything I'll have some plates I can store till I get some rye grains .. and the other 2 CC's left from the 6cc leftovers

I'll keep in mind agar is more for dropping into quart jars not half pints and mostly for mono substrates not SGFC cakes .. oh well I'm still hoping half these plates pull threw just so I can feel like I did a process right, even though it was for the wrong Tek.

Atleast now I know for cakes if it's not innoced by a syringe then it's probably not being innoced the right way

I'll catch on soon I promise :p any other links or replies much welcome <3 still have yet to prep my SGFC and half pint lids .. have 60qt tubs and 37 qt tubs with both half pints and quart jars so I'm ready :crazy2:

If I can save you some frustration.  Don't make a SGFC.  That's a terrible idea.  I have a dead one lying on my floor.  Switch to a water tub (link in my sig), just a tub, 1in of water, and a rack.  Ez Pz.

You can do pf tek with agar, skip the dry verm layer and use a polyfil or sfd lid

Awesome, thanks for the reply. I will look into that. Just was looking for some people who might've been in similar situations or other methods I could use these wedges for caking.. or anything else so I don't have to store them, but I plan on SGFC cakes just cuz I'm using top closet storage for now ..

I'll get more space to manage with soon, still have about a week till I know if these plates are good to wedge anyways. Thank you for the reply, hope to post some good pics of my first made plates and hoping I can find a way to get them in my half pints .. if not atleast I made 2ccs go a long ways and hopefully keep them for some bulk monos in the near future, bags are looking good but way too slow with just spores

If you're planning to do "top closet storage", that's even more reason not to do a SGFC.  Seriously look into the water tub, it's so much easier and vastly superior (link in sig).  I don't plan on having any more cakes for a long time, but I still switched from a SGFC to a water tub in my 3rd flush because of how annoying a SGFC is (with holes, water sometimes coming out of holes, stupid perlite, etc)

No doubt  I've read amany a LC and LI teks. Still seems out of my league experience wise lmao  but I guess you never learn if you don't try right ! Progress on where I drop my wedges soon, letting the plates do their thing .. and I'll have an idea of what to do by then ..

Hoping to fruit cakes or monos before these bags even get opened for FAE, these bags are months I'm sure if I can get a tub going I'll harvest before they even start fruiting

Mush love all <3

I was gonna say li, make an li, draw into sterilised syringe, and treat as a spore syringe.

Blenderless LI is ez. Dump agar in a sealed pced water vessel shake and pour. No syringe needed. If you make the agar soft it breaks up more.

Awesome, plates are looking good. I think I'ma save one of them for a LI attempt.
That'd be much easier innocing half pints that way, but I will remember that I can substitute the dry verm layer with polyfil if needed.
Thank you all for the replies. I will be looking into some blenderless li teks now :tongue2:

I like a lot of this teks

He also has videos showing the inoculation

If you want to use PF jars with agar wedges, then you need to replace the dry vermiculite filter with a grain filter lid.

Option 1
Use Dawgy style lids. It's just an synthetic filter disk(SFD) between lid and band.

I'm using 4mm in combination with 2 layers of 3m micropore tape on 4 holes(1/8") without any problems.

Option 2
Use unmodified ziploc twist 500ml containers as PF jars. Read Violet's PODS TEK.

For larger(>500ml) PF cakes:
- It's recommended to use LI because faster colonization.
- Using agar wedges is not recommended because of slow colonization speed.
- Use containers that are wider than taller to increase the surface and reduce the compression of substrate.
