Why half pints?
    #1615710 - 06/06/03 11:17 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

A friend want's to try some brf cakes and asked me why not use pint jars instead of 1/2 pints since the footprint would be about the same and I really didn't have a definitive answer. My best guess is that producing fruits in the shortest period of time with the least amount of effort is the objective of the cake teks but I'm not really sure. Any particular reason for using half pints? Also, any comments on cubensis varieties other than pf that are particularly suited for cake cultivation would be appreciated.

Pints colonize slower, thus they have more uncolonized substrate just chillin in the jar waiting for mycelium. Contams walk straight up to that uncolonized substrate, start talking shit, a fight comes out, the brf loses, and the contams blow their load and fuck your project.

That's why we use half pints. The more often contams blow their load the less often you blow your mind

I'll tell you what you need to use since they're not expensive at all; MycoBag.com Spawn Bags. They're only about a buck or two each and they can be put in the PC. You could have quite a bit of Substrate in the bags so that only one bag would be needed to make quite a large tray when cased. Well, that's just my suggestion, I just think they're a really good company to work with ...

Nice illustration of a contamination taking place

Half pints are sufficient for the pf tek because they keep the substrate packed in tight, with agar and whole grain you have to "shake" the jar, in order for faster innoculation. 1/2 pint jars will innoculate faster than quart, 2qt, etc.

I don't think its about being tight...you don't want it tight actually...you wanna loosely spoon it in and NOT pack it down

My other friend knows all about this but the friend I mentioned originially is really a friend as opposed to a rhetorical friend and wants to try a hand at growing with cakes. I suspected that the reason for half pints was colonization speed but wasn't really sure if that was the main reason.
Thanks to you all for the replys
