I have used half-pint jars with millet and it worked fine. I spawned a pound of earthworm caseings and got like an ounce off of it.

6T , is man to get real good detailed info from , I can help with half pinters . Kind of a short cut method , works very good , no blown grain yet .
Milo/millet mixture of grain half pint jars distilled water
Put 1/3 cup of "dry" grain in each jar put 40 mls of distilled water in each jar cover jars with lids inverted (rubber side up ) not tight just loose pc or ac for 50 min when jars cool enough to handle shake to break up grain , otherwise you get a clump that is hard to colonize evenly when jars are room temp (usually wait till next day ) inoc with agar wedge check in 3 days to see if colonization is taking place shake for first time when 5% colonized then again in 5 days , let fully colonize in dark till ready to inoc bulk or G2G transfers If doing injections of spores there is variation to method I will explain if you are interested in it , just let me know . Good Luck "May The Mushroom Goddess Bless All Your Endeavors "

soak the grain for 12 hours then drain for atleast half hour until it wont drip anymore then add it to your jars. You dont have to guess the ratio of water to grain this way and it works great.

Yeah, if 1/2 pints are all you have handy, they are fine!!
but if you have bigger jars, and your PC will hold them.. use the bigger ones just because they are.. well... BIGGER!!
that's all.
I also agree with the soak method... mixing water and grain seperately seems tricky, prone to fuckups!

Auotclavs are very expensive , is why using half pinters . Expand the recipe by using base measurments .... for every 1/3 cup of grain use 40 mils of water , just remeber to detremine how much is full enough (need room to shake it up ) for the jar you are using . I find the 1/3 cup is perfect , a bit modest but practical . Not to mention , colonizes very fast and thouroughly . By the time jar is ready it is 3/4 - 5/8 full , all depends on mycelial growth .
